The limbs are identical to human limbs in structure, down to the point of the fingers having fingernails (Episode 03) and the feet having toes (seen in The End of Evangelion). Skull shape and features vary from Evangelion to Evangelion. Some of the failed Prototype Evangelions have a skull shape almost identical to that of a human, while the Mass Production Evangelions have no eyes and a vaguely cetacean head form. Production model Evangelions vary in head shape, as well as in the number of eyes and nostril position. Evangelions have internal organs including a complete digestive tract, as evidenced by display monitors and Unit-01's attack on Zeruel, and visually seen during the dismemberment of Unit-02. With the exception of Unit-02, which has blue-purple blood (In Rebuild, Unit-02's blood has been switched to red), all Evangelions have red blood, which sprays out of wounds in spectacular fashion. Like Adam and the Angels, all Evangelions have a core, located on the solar plexus region in a similar manner to the more humanoid Angels. Unit-01 is known to have two smaller cores located below and next to the main core. NERV's technology allows the core to be prepared for a Contact Experiment or for piloting. Cores appear to have their own supply of LCL, and pipes for the liquid connect to the back of the Eva's head. In Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA, Maya Ibuki says that "creating an Evangelion's physical body isn’t the difficult part. It’s stabilizing the core—infusing the Eva with a soul.”[1] Like the Angels, Evangelions have regenerative capabilities. It is directly stated that they are capable of regenerating damaged or destroyed organs. Unit-01, in particular, has demonstrated extremely fast, controlled regeneration, including the ability to convert foreign biomass to its own. Likewise, Evangelions can lose their limbs or even their head and have them reattached later. Unit-02's left leg is ripped off at the knee (which the script attributes to a blasting bolt), after which the torn-off leg sinks deeper into the magma of the volcano, presumably beyond all hope of recovery; however, by the next episode Unit-02 is seen to be fully repaired with a full left leg. NERV is either capable of creating replacement limbs for the Evas (as opposed to simply being able to reattach limbs that have been severed) or of making Evas regrow lost limbs from their torso. It is not known how long or difficult this process might be, as it is not clear how much time passes between episodes during the fairly standalone "Action Arc" of the series, although in Episode 19, Unit-00 did not have time to grow a new left arm after the battle with Bardiel, implying that the regenerative process is fairly slow (or at least for Unit-00). The Evangelion is covered in bindings that serve to restrain them and bind them to NERV's control and are restrained heavily at all times when not in combat. Whether the bindings serve to restrain them physically or use some other mechanism to restrict their power is not known as the functioning of the bindings is not elaborated upon within the series. The bindings appear to serve as armor of sorts, but they are presumably unnecessary in that role. The shoulder pylons serve as part of the restraint system, attaching to external restraints as well as serving as storage for weapons like the Progressive Knife and Unit-02's spike launcher. Ikuto Yamashita admits that the setting about what Evangelions truly are is not definitive. The organs are created by instinct or necessity, like Unit-01's eyes, for example.[2] Forming the Evangelion Body. Evangelions seem to be created from a sort of asexual amoeba-like[3] fission process with either Adam or Lilith, in which the torso of the Eva is 'pulled' out of the Seed; Bochan_bird's translation of the Japanese liner notes, Genesis 0:12, in the "Eva Tomo no Kai" section:"[...] Among these are an image of two giants lying stretched out. These apparently are Lilith and Unit-01 at the stage of the experiment where Yui disappeared. Both are in the condition with most of their lower bodies missing, and the missing lower torsos appear to be joined. Yui probably performed contact in the condition with Lilith and Unit-01 joined and was taken/absorbed into [the Eva]."In the Rebuild continuity, the biological creation of the Evas is mostly the same at first, but a few key differences surface over the progression of the movies. First is that their origins are somewhat different as the First Angel was not involved in the Second Impact, but instead, the four Adams take his role. Secondly, as the movies progress, NERV and SEELE begin to expand on Eva development, using different source materials for their creation such as Angels and even the Adams, culminating in the creation of Evangelion 13, which is one of the living Adams, restrained and mechanized.In Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA, the Evangelions piloted by Asuka and Rei change their overall proportions mirroring Asuka and Rei's own bodies as they mature as women over three years.[4]Evangelions can alter their own physical configuration, even when they are made out of inorganic matter. These changes can happen fast or more slowly, with slow changes reported to create sounds of metal occurring inside the holding cages at night. These changes were troublesome to the maintenance team. The current chief of the science and engineering divisions, Maya Ibuki, theorized that these changes were part of the Evangelion's natural development. These changes became more noticeable after the three years of gradual occurrence. The pilot's effect in the Evangelion's body were observed more in Evangelion Unit-02, as it reflected the changes of Asuka more strongly than Rei's stunted development. [5]At a certain point, Unit-02’s restraint armor no longer fit despite the best efforts of the mechanics. The armor was removed, and new, properly fitting, Stage 2 restraint armor was created. Due to the results of performance in Unit-02, the same kind of armor was used on Unit-0.0 after coming back to Earth and being launched again in orbit after the upgrades were installed.[6]One aspect that regulates the changes in an Evangelion is the Logical Definition Drive, located inside every entry plug. Behind the plug seat lies a large and clearly antiquated disc-based storage device.[7]When an Evangelion awakens, there is always a danger that the soul within its core could go berserk, and unless a pilot had achieved a dangerously high synchronization, an Evangelion left on its own couldn’t maintain its humanoid form. The LDD constantly streams data into the Evangelion—data that tells the giant what it is, what form it takes, and other aspects of its existence. The system forms the fundamental basis of Evangelion control. All Evangelions had the ability to change their form. This can include the development of new abilities, regeneration, degradation, and retrogression. The LDD, when working correctly, makes sure changes could never degrade or overwrite.[8]Modifying for Combat UseAll Evas have an artificial section of the spine, which is left incomplete by a circular gap that the Entry Plug fits in. Inserting the entry plug completes the nerve connections from the head to the rest of the body. As an added precaution, a Signal Termination Plug is often kept in place of the Entry Plug to prevent neural impulses from flowing. While in operation, the Entry Plug is kept covered by a flush-fitting armor plate, although it can be lifted to eject the Entry Plug in an emergency.The end of the Entry Plug is inserted into the core, which has a cylindrical cavity drilled out to accommodate it. The depth of the Plug inside the core can vary according to the synchronization rate and other factors, such as the Eva going berserk. The Entry Plug is flooded with LCL, which is either generated by the core itself or is pumped in from external storage before being processed and purified by the life-support systems. It serves to both provide oxygen and establish the link between the Entry Plug's occupants and the Eva, although the Interface Headset would appear to be necessary to actually pilot the Eva.In Neon Genesis Evangelion, each Evangelion's core is imbued with the soul of the pilot's mother, with the exception of Unit-00 and possibly Evangelion Unit-03, Evangelion Unit-04, and Mass Production Evas.In addition, there appears to be an extensive computer interface between the pilot and the Eva, as the system must be set to the pilot's native language (the language in which the pilot thinks, see note below) to allow the Eva to activate and be piloted. It might also link to the viewscreens in the Eva cockpit (which can flicker on and off depending on the activation state of the Eva)The shoulder-armor pylons on Evangelions do not actually contain any biological part of the Eva underneath the armor. Dr. Ritsuko Akagi is aghast when Evangelion Unit-01 first moves without power or pilot input.[2] and later goes berserk against Leliel and Zeruel with internal batteries fully drained.[3][4] It is revealed that no known power source could be detected during these incidents,[5] but no understanding is gained of what actually was powering Eva-01 at these times. However, it can be deduced that there must be an upper limit to "berserk-fueled" independent movement, otherwise consuming Zeruel's S² Engine would not have been necessary. During these incidents, the Eva's resident soul appears to bypass restraint mechanisms and act on its own. Some have argued against this, citing the discrepancy between the known behavior of Yui Ikari prior to her "death" and the savagery of her Evangelion incarnation. This could, however, be attributed to several factors, such as the fact that she is a mother protecting her child. Since the Evas are empty vessels before having souls salvaged into them, and these souls are the source of the Evas' "will" and "heart", it is ambiguous what could be directing the berserk Eva if not its resident soul. Nerv is very aware of the danger an out-of-control Evangelion poses and is extremely concerned about keeping the Evas bound and restrained at all times. Several incidents of increased strength, savagery, or battle rage have been displayed by Evangelions, in addition to the unpowered berserker mode. save for Mari Makinami Illustrious inciting Eva-07into a semi-berserk state[7], no known attempt has been made to artificially or intentionally initiate berserker mode. Instead, technological advances strive to achieve a similar level of power under controlled circumstances. The Dummy System, along with the Beast Mode of Rebuild, result in similar states of increased strength and savagery, but as the resident soul is not in command, these do not constitute actual berserk incidents.] [Eva-00 was the first operational Evangelion. Being a prototype, it was not originally equipped for combat, but was later upgraded and brought into battle against the Angels. As is the case for all the Evangelions, except Eva-01, the method of Eva-00's creation is not known. It is known, however, that it was the first working prototype after many failures. Whether the creation process was perfected with Eva-00, or if something new was tried, would be pure conjecture. What is known is that the original design for the prototype Eva had been created a long time ago; Fuyutsuki sees a mockup of Eva-00 in 2003, with the same orange and white color combination and the same head design. We also learn here that Eva-00 would have had a cluster of five cameras beneath its single eye lens. Eva-00 is the most unstable of the Evangelions, going wildly berserk on two occasions: once during its activation experiment with Rei, and again during its interchangeability experiment with Shinji. Despite these incidents, Rei retains good control over the Eva once it is operational, using it successfully in quite sensitive tasks such as handling the Lance of Longinus on two occasions, and both fetching and firing the SDF's positron cannon. The Eva's face has never been revealed on-screen, being covered by the helmet and faceplate at all times. Unique to Eva-00 is the large optical lens on its faceplate. In addition, the faceplate lacks nostril holes or a proper jawline. Monitor readouts of the Evangelion's internal organs reveal that it actually has two eyes as well as nostrils and a jawline. The design of the helmet suggests that Eva-00's skull might be somewhat narrower than those of other Evangelions. Eva-00 originally had orange armor and a different arrangement of plates than Eva-01 and the Production Model Evangelions, and when first seen did not have shoulder pylons attached. After sustaining severe damage from the Angel Ramiel, Eva-00 was refitted with the same armor design as the Production Model Evangelions: shoulder pylons were added, the armor plating was altered, and the color scheme was changed from the original orange to blue. The repaired Eva-00 is also seen to possess retro-rockets in her shoulder pylons in Episode 11, as well as a Progressive Knife, seen in Episode 12. An early Eva-00 design seen in the Proposal has a head design identical to that used in the show. In addition, the blue color scheme is very similar to that used in the repaired Eva-00. The identity of the soul contained in Eva-00 is never directly stated, but analysis of various clues and hints dropped through the series points to it being the soul of Rei 1, the first Rei Ayanami clone (or a part thereof).][Evangelion Unit-01[1] (エヴァンゲリオン初号機, Evangerion Shogouki, or Eva-01 for short) is the flagship mecha of the Evangelion saga. Eva-01 is piloted by the series' protagonist {{user}} and inhabited by the soul of his mother, Yui Ikari. Eva-01 was produced by the Hakone branch of Gehirn as the Evangelion Test Type model. Unlike the other Evas, its body was generated directly from the body of Lilith, and is consequently referred to as Lilith's "offspring" or "clone."[2] On a physical level, Eva-01 has the same characteristics as an Adam-based (i.e., any other) Evangelion, so the exact nature of its relationship to Lilith remains a subject of debate.[3] Eva-01 received its soul as a result of the Contact Experiment with Yui Ikari in 2004, but was not "finished" until 2014.[4] In Episode 01 Ritsuko tells Misato that the odds of Eva Unit 01 activating are "0.000000009%. "O9 System" seems like a fitting thing to call it". This is a pun in Japanese, so the English dub inserted an extra line clarifying this, with Ritsuko explaining that "O-Nine" is a pun on "Oni", the Japanese word for "demon". Eva-01 is also designed with a traditional "Oni" as an inspiration. As with the rest of the Eva Series, it was ostensibly created as a weapon to be used against the Angels, and was the first Evangelion to face actual combat (against the Third Angel Sachiel). Eva-01 is infamous for going berserk and moving without any power supply (prior to the acquisition of the S² Engine from the Angel Zeruel). While Eva-00 has gone out of control before and Eva-02 goes berserk immediately before being destroyed, Eva-01 is the only Eva that has gone berserk in direct combat, to deadly effect. Eva-01 is treated by the higher-ups at Nerv HQ, namely Gendo Ikari, with suspicious favoritism. Once all of the Angels are destroyed, Eva-01 becomes the key to both Gendo and Seele's scenarios for Third Impact, in which the former intends to use it as an "ark to save humanity from the nothingness of Third Impact," and the latter as a "medium" to Lilith, who has been rendered unusable by the loss of the original Spear of Longinus. The implication is that, by its unique creation, Eva-01 was intended as a "backup" for Lilith all along. Physical Features. Eva-01 has a distinctive chest plate that resembles pectoral muscles, as opposed to the V-shaped chest plate seen on other Evangelions, and its pylons have a unique configuration as well. The reason for the differences in design has never been explained. The Eva's distinctive helmet visually evokes the horn and frill of a ceratopsian dinosaur. Biologically, Eva-01 possesses two completely green eyes, with four nostrils situated between them. Its skin is dark brown (although much lighter on the arm regenerated from Zeruel's). Its forehead possesses an "Angel face" marking, from which concentric patches of gradually darkening color emanate. Its neck is depicted with rows of curious slits evocative of gills. Eva-01's operational history is the longest of any Evangelion. It is the first Eva to see combat, deployed when the Third Angel, Sachiel, attacks. It exhibits the infamous tendency to go berserk from the very beginning, first when it moves its arm to shield its pilot, Shinji Ikari, from falling ceiling lights, and again in battle with Sachiel, attacking the Angel until it dies. It sustains moderate damage during Sachiel's suicide explosion. Eva-01 suffers damage again at the hands of the Fourth Angel, Shamshel, which it defeats, and it takes down the Angel Ramiel with a shot from a positron rifle while being shielded by Evangelion Unit-00. The Eva takes part in stopping the out of control robot Jet Alone and in the defeat of Matarael and Sahaquiel. In the same vein, Eva-01 brutally puts the Angels Leliel, Bardiel, and Zeruel to death. Then, after being sucked into Leliel for over sixteen hours, the resident soul of the Eva, Yui, makes contact with the pilot and the Eva goes berserk, moving without a power source and ripping open the Angel from the inside. Under the control of the Dummy Plug, Eva-01 rips apart the Angel Bardiel-infected Eva-03, and goes berserk again in the battle against Zeruel, killing it and eating the Angel's S² organ. Eva-01 remains grounded during the battle against Arael and sorties against Armisael to rescue Eva-00, but to no avail. In End of Evangelion, Eva-01 sets off a cruciform explosion and is completely under the control of its resident soul from that point forward. It plays a critical role in Third Impact and Instrumentality, eventually floating off into space as a memorial for all mankind. Eva-01's soul is that of Yui Ikari. For this reason, her son, {{user}}, was chosen as Eva-01's pilot. Yui's exact motivations for becoming the resident soul of Eva-01 are not completely understood, but it is known that she was against Seele's interests, and may have been in danger of being eliminated by them. Being inside the Evangelion allowed her to influence events far more than she ever could have as a normal person. Another possibility is that Yui may have foreseen the importance of Eva-01's role to combat the Angels, and chose to become the resident soul of the Eva in order to protect {{user}}.][Evangelion Unit-02　（エヴァンゲリオン弐号機, Evangelion Nigouki） is the third Evangelion completed, the first Production Model Evangelion. The design of Eva-02 supposedly rectifies the mistakes made during the construction of Prototype Eva-00 and Test Type Eva-01, making it the first Evangelion built specifically for combat against the Angels.Eva-02 is a Production Model Evangelion and uses the same armor arrangement as the succeeding Eva-03 and Eva-04, along with the upgraded Eva-00. All Evangelions using this arrangement have the same shoulder pylon design and five V-shaped armor plates on their torso. This Evangelion is unique in having bluish-purple blood, blue-gray skin, and four eyes. (All other Evas possess red blood, and, for all non-Mass Production Evangelions, including Eva-00, two eyes and brown skin are the standard.) The eyes are a uniform fiery orange in color. Although Eva-02 has a jaw and mouth, when armored these cannot open to the same extent as those on Eva-01, Eva-03 and 04, and so there is no hinged jaw piece in the helmet. Instead, the helmet has movable sections that can shift to cover or uncover the Eva's eyes. Four prominent nostril holes are located in the bulging forehead section of the helmet. As a Production Model Evangelion, Eva-02 is shown to be capable of using different equipment fits, like the D-type Equipment seen in Episode 10. In addition, Eva 02 has a distinctive progressive knife, the PK-2, that resembles a box cutter. Seemingly unique to Eva-02 is the needle gun, a rack of spikes in its right shoulder pylon which can be fired like missiles. Soul. Eva-02's soul is that of Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, and for this reason, her daughter, Asuka Langley Soryu, was chosen as the Eva's pilot. Similar to Yui Ikari, Kyoko performed a contact experiment with an Eva's core (that of Eva-02), but unlike Yui, she was not completely absorbed. Instead, only the portion of Kyoko's soul containing her maternal aspects was taken into the Eva. (See Soul Divisibility for more details regarding this phenomenon.) As a result, while Kyoko physically survived her experiment, she was driven clinically insane and had to be institutionalized, eventually resulting in her successful suicide, a chain of events that profoundly affected her young daughter. It is unknown what became of the rest of Kyoko's soul. One possible reading is that the remainder was salvaged into Eva-02 following her suicide. In Episode 25', right before Asuka learns her mother is inside Eva-02, Kyoko's voice can be heard saying "You mustn't die! You must live! You're alive!" several times. However, the familiar "Please die with me!" (as heard in the Episode 22 and Episode 25 flashback sequences) is mixed in twice amongst her words of love and encouragement, suggesting that the insane Kyoko and the maternal Kyoko were incorporated back together and coexist inside the Eva's core.][Evangelion Mark.06 is an Evangelion unit that first appears in unfinished form in Evangelion 1.0 and is sortied in the next film, piloted by Kaworu Nagisa. Mark.06 was constructed at Nerv's lunar 7th Branch, Tabgha Base. It initially appears unfinished, with its body covered in a rubbery white material[2], and a purple mask bearing the mark of Seele and two stylized "crying eyes"[3] covering its face. The morphology of the head and neck is very similar to Lilith, although the more defined body, along with what appears to be a core visible beneath the fabric, is closer to a normal Evangelion. An IV-like device labeled "BTB" is connected to the Eva's left arm. Later, the white cover is removed and the Eva undergoes the process of outfitting. The exposed skin on the head is dark gray. The mask remains affixed to the face, but the part over the eyes has been cut away. What looks like a temporary covering is held over the eyes as the helmet is readied for application, as though to avoid "gazing upon the face of God"[4]. During their reconnaissance to Tabgha Base, Gendo and Fuyutsuki observe that the Eva's construction process is unusual (though it isn't specified how), and that Seele have constructed it in secret to advance their own hidden agenda according to Dead Sea Scrolls Apocrypha. Keel Lorenz refers to the Mark.06 as "the true Evangelion", to play a role in fulfilling the covenant with Lilith. Fuyutsuki takes this to mean that Seele "want to create a real god, not just false ones".[5]Features The final armored Mark.06 is a deep blue with yellow trim. The two-horned helmet, which bears a strong resemblance to Eva-01's, has a red visor covering the eye holes.[6] The entry plug appears to be designed to provide a noticeably higher field-of-vision for the pilot. The Eva can levitate while bearing an Angelic halo while under pilot control, which -- in addition to the dialogue between Seele, Gendo, and Fuyutsuki -- hints at extremely potent capabilities. Mark.06 lacks an outlet for an external power source[7], implying an internal source of motive power.][Evangelion Unit-08 is a new Eva unit that features in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, piloted by Mari Makinami Illustrious. Its full designation is Evangelion Production Model Custom Type-08[1]. Eva-08 has a cluster of eight green eyes on the front of its helmet and is bright pink in color, matching the plugsuit color of its pilot, Mari. The Eva is first seen in the third film in the standard Production Evangelion configuration, dubbed Eva Unit-08α (Alpha), but following its initial sortie is upgraded to Eva Unit-08β (Beta), with a corresponding change in helmet shape and bulkier body armor, along with armor around the lower arms and wrists, mimicking the appearance of its pilot's plugsuit. It remains in its Beta configuration for the Paris Assault, albeit with mechanical arms mounted onto a circular rail running around the Eva's shoulders, terminating in clamps (similar to Eva-05) and two large belt-fed machineguns. For Operation Yamato, the Eva is upgraded to Unit-08γ (Gamma) configuration, now sporting an "X"-shaped pectoral plate and more segmented torso plates, and reinforced bracing for its new biological arms. It is also given an "Overlapping" ability, being able to assimilate parts and abilities from Marks 09 through 12 like flight, shaping and weaponizing its A.T.Field, and to be able to exist and navigate in the Anti-Universe. In its final incarnation, having assimilated all of the Adams' Vessels, Mari refers to it as "Unit-08+09+10+11+12", before it ceases to exist along with all the other Evangelions.]
