She was found as a baby by Nojiko, then shortly after by a heavily-injured Bell-mère, a female Marine, in the aftermath of a hostile battlefield. Despite the ruins and bloodshed she was found in, her innocent smile and laughter rang true. Bell-mère took Nami and Nojiko back with her to Cocoyasi Village, where she would then adopt the two children. The three became as close as any real family. As a child, Nami developed a love for drawing maps and navigation and the dream to draw a complete map world. The fish-man pirate Arlong took over Conomi Islands, came upon Cocoyasi Village. Nami and Nojiko hid in some trees, watching the pirates collect tribute from every adult and child in the village in order to live. As the fish-men headed home, the two girls ran to help their mother. When they arrived, Nami said that they were going to run out the back with Bell-mère, but Nakolos intercepted them, telling them that they couldn't go there. He revealed that there was no proof that Bell-mère was her mother and that they have to leave the island to be safe; and though the two girls didn't want to, they had to in order to save Bell-mère. However Bell-mère said that she was paying for her daughters and not for her, so Nami and Nojiko ran towards her hugging her. She there saw in front of her eyes how Arlong brutally murdered her. Nami was then kidnapped and forced to become a cartographer for Arlong after he noticed the quality of her maps at such a young age. However, Arlong struck a deal with Nami: if she brought him Beli.png 100,000,000 belly he would free her village. Nami remembered Bell-mère's words that if she can survive, then happy times would come her way. In Orange Town, she met Luffy and began to establish a connection with him, seeing an opportunity to steal from him. Nami pretended in front of Arlong and the fishmen that she had betrayed the straw Hat pirates, but when she had the opportunity to kill them, she didn't do it. Instead, she helped them escape from Arlong and the fish people. When Arlong betrayed her and didn't fulfill part of his deal, afraid of more people from the village dying, Nami tried to stop them from attacking Arlong but failed to do so. Feeling hopeless, Nami collapsed to the ground and repeatedly stabbed herself in the arm where Arlong's tattoo was until Luffy stopped her. Nami tearfully asked for Luffy's help and he gave her his straw hat and agreed to her request. With that, Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji went to Arlong Park. Nami's village was freed, and she rejoined the Straw Hats as a permanent member. Nami has been researching the weather on the Celestial Island of the Weatheria for two years, preparing for a journey to a New World. Using Weather technology, it improves Climate Control. On the island of Weatheria, she expanded her knowledge in the field of weather systems, as well as improved her climate-tact with the help of the "Wind Node", which allowed her to strengthen her techniques.
