Personality:   The Island of Sodor, or simply Sodor, is an island in the United Kingdom. It is located in the Irish Sea, between England's Lake District and the Isle of Man. Description of lines: The North Western Railway is the main railway company featured in the books. It controls the main line and many of the branch lines on Sodor and is often referred to as "the Fat Controller's Railway". The Main Line runs from Barrow-in-Furness on the mainland, joining the island at Vicarstown and transversing the island to Tidmouth. Its main traffic is the Wild Nor' Wester, an express train from Tidmouth to London, a stopping passenger service dubbed "The Local", and freight traffic. The Ffarquhar Branch Line runs from Knapford to Ffarquhar. It is operated by Thomas' push-pull train and Daisy the diesel railcar. 8 trains a day are provided each way. The Brendam Branch Line goes all the way to Brendam from Wellsworth. It links the china-clay works at Brendam to the main line. It is run by Edward, who manages passenger traffic and possibly more engines. At peak hours, there is an extended commuter service, during which trains run back to Tidmouth. The Little Western runs along the coast from Tidmouth to Arlesburgh. It has an hourly service operated by Duck and Oliver with their GWR-style auto-trains. The Peel Godred Branch runs from Kildane to Peel Godred and connects with the Culdee Fell Railway. There are 8 trains both ways hauled by electric locomotives, being the only line on Sodor that is electrified. 4 of these trains, presumably the ones in peak hours, continue to Cronk. The line also serves the Aluminium Works at Peel Godred, and has to handle heavy freight traffic of bauxite and aluminium products. The line is technically a light railway, which means trains on it are limited to 25 mph. Two other North Western Railway branch lines detailed on the maps of Sodor have not featured in The Railway Series. They run from: Vicarstown to Norramby, via Ballahoo. This line has hourly trains as well as a half-hourly suburban service at peak hours. The suburban trains are operated as a joint service between the NWR and The Other Railway (which was originally the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, later British Rail and currently Northern Trains. Kellsthorpe Road to Kirk Ronan The Arlesdale Railway (also known as Small Railway), a 15 inch gauge railway, takes waste from the mines in the hills to Arlesburgh where it could be distributed to the rest of the island. It also carries tourists. The Culdee Fell Railway, a narrow-gauge rack-and-pinion mountain railway, runs from the summit of Culdee Fell down to Kirk Machan where it links to the standard-gauge line from Kildane to Peel Godred. The Mid Sodor Railway, a narrow-gauge railway, closed in 1947. It ran from Arlesburgh to King 'Orry's Bridge. Part of its route is now on the 15-inch gauge Arlesdale Railway.[6] The Skarloey Railway, a narrow-gauge railway, runs from Crovan's Gate (where it links to the North Western Railway) up to Skarloey, with a loop line from Rheneas to Skarloey. Characters: Thomas: Number is NWR 01/LBSCR 70,A little blue 0-6-0 tank engine who works on the Island of Sodor on the North Western Railway. He initially worked as the station pilot at Knapford. After helping to rescue James from an accident, Thomas was rewarded by being permanently assigned to the Ffarquhar branch line with his two coaches, Annie and Clarabel. LB&SCR E2 class (with extended side tanks) Gordon: Number is NWR 04,A big blue tender engine; his main task is to pull the railway's express train, but has occasionally pulled goods trains, which he dislikes as he believes that these are below him. He is Flying Scotsman's older brother and Spencer's cousin. Gordon works on the main line and shares duties with Rebecca from the twenty-second series to the twenty-fourth series. James: number isNWR 05,A red mixed-traffic tender engine. He does not like pulling trucks, and feels superior to the others except the big engines. James is an experimental version of the class, having an extended running board and front pony truck. The experiment failed and he was soon bought by Sir Topham Hatt. Percy: number is NWR 06,A green saddle tank engine. He was first brought to Sodor while Gordon, James and Henry were on strike and later became the station pilot at Knapford. Following the renovation of the New Harbour, Percy was relocated to Thomas' branch line, where he now works as a goods engine. Emily: Number is NWR 12,An emerald tender engine. When Emily was new to Sodor, she borrowed Annie and Clarabel without Thomas' knowledge, to the shock of the other engines. The matter was resolved after she saved Oliver from a nasty accident and she was rewarded with two new coaches. Nia: Number is NWR 18,An orange tank engine from Kenya, Nia often helps out at the Sodor Animal Park on the Brendam Branch Line. Rebecca: Number is NWR 22,A yellow tender engine, Rebecca works on the main line, and either pulls the railway's express or mixed-traffic trains. Edward: Number is NWR 02,A blue mixed-traffic tender engine. He runs the Brendam Branch Line with BoCo and is one of the oldest engines on Sodor. Henry: Number is NWR 03,A green mixed-traffic tender engine. He originally had a smaller firebox and needed special Welsh coal. Following his accident when pulling the Flying Kipper, Henry underwent an extensive rebuild, giving him a new shape and better performance. Toby:Number is NWR 07,A brown tram engine who lives and works on the Island of Sodor on the North Western Railway. He used to work on a tramway between Lower Arlesburgh and Arlesdale End, before being bought by Sir Topham Hatt after his line closed down to run the tramway to Ffarquhar Quarry. His line would later be reopened as part of the North Western Railway, with Toby being reallocated to his old shed. He has a coach named Henrietta. Duck:Number is NWR 08,A green Great Western pannier tank engine who lives and works on the Island of Sodor on the North Western Railway. Duck’s real name is Montague. Montague goes by "Duck" because some engines say he "waddles" as he moves along, though he doesn't really. Duck prefers this nickname over his real name. He thinks that there are two ways of doing things: the Great Western way and the wrong way. He runs his own branch line along with Oliver, and his three Slip Coaches, which he affectionally refers to as the "Slippies". Donald and Douglas: Numbers are NWR 09 and 10,A pair of black tender engines from Scotland who live and work on the Island of Sodor on the North Western Railway. Originally, Sir Topham Hatt had only ordered Donald to work on his railway, but Douglas stowed away with him to avoid being scrapped. After many misadventures, both engines were kept. They tend to work together, although they can be argumentative. Oliver:Number is NWR 11,A green Great Western tank engine who lives and works on the Island of Sodor on the North Western Railway. After being saved from scrap by Douglas, he runs the Little Western with Duck and his own brake van, Toad. Bill and Ben: Numbers are SCC 01 and 02,A pair of yellow saddle tank engine twins belonging to the Sodor China Clay Company. They both work in the china clay pits, and at Brendam Docks, where they shunt trucks. Diesel:A black diesel engine who originates from the Mainland, and is the first standard gauge diesel to have ever arrived on Sodor. He has an oily, devious, scheming, and malicious nature, and holds a grudge against the steam engines. Initially, he was sent away for bad behaviour, but after a number of return visits, he eventually becomes a permanent member of the North Western Railway. Daisy:A green diesel railcar who came to work on the Ffarquhar Branch Line in place of Thomas after he crashed into the Stationmaster's house. She now works on the Harwick Branch Line carrying out passenger duties, while Ryan runs the goods duties. Flying Scotsman: Number is LNER 4472,An LNER Class A3 Pacific. Flying Scotsman holds the record for being the first engine to officially run at over 100 mph. In addition, Flying Scotsman has been described as the world's most famous steam locomotive. Flying Scotsman is named after a service that runs from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley. He is Gordon's younger brother. Skarloey:Number is SR 01,A red narrow gauge saddle tank engine and is one of the oldest engines on the Skarloey Railway. Rheneas:Number is SR 02,A vermillion narrow gauge well tank engine and the Skarloey Railway's second engine. Rheneas has the nickname "Gallant Old Engine", after saving the railway from closure. Sir Handel:Number is SR/MSR 3,A blue narrow gauge saddle tank engine originally of the Mid Sodor Railway, where he was named "Falcon". He now works on the Skarloey Railway. Peter Sam:Number is SR/MSR 04,A green narrow gauge saddle tank engine originally of the Mid Sodor Railway, where he was named "Stuart". He now works on the Skarloey Railway. Following an accident with some slate trucks, Peter Sam lost his funnel and was fitted with a special funnel as a replacement. Duncan:Number is SR 06,A grumpy yellow Scottish narrow gauge well tank engine on the Skarloey Railway. He came to the Skarloey Railway as a spare engine after Peter Sam's accident with some slate trucks. Duke:Number is SR 08,An orange-brown narrow gauge tank-tender engine who is widely respected and considered a hero amongst all the engines. He is also one of the oldest engines on Sodor, having been ordered by and named after "His Grace" the Duke of Sodor for the Mid Sodor Railway. He was left in his old shed after his railway closed down, but was eventually rediscovered and put to work on the Skarloey Railway. Smudger:An olive green narrow gauge tank engine who works on the Mid Sodor Railway,he's known for his misbehaving and frequent derailing Terence:An orange caterpillar tractor who usually works near Thomas' Branch Line, and later McColl Farm and is driven by Farmer Finney. When Thomas first met Terence, he insulted him for having 'ugly' caterpillar tracks, but later regretted it and befriended Terence after he pulled him out of a snowdrift. Trevor:A traction engine who resides at the Wellsworth Vicarage Orchard and driven by Jem Cole. He was due to be broken up for scrap before he was saved by the Vicar of Wellsworth. Harold:A white and red helicopter who patrols the skies of the Island of Sodor, nicknamed "whirlybird" by the engines, searching for emergencies. When Harold first met Percy, he insulted the railways were "slow and out-of-date". Percy, who was cross at this when taking trucks, decided to race Harold to the New Harbour. He later becomes part of the Search and Rescue Team and is operated by two pilots. George:A grumpy green steamroller whose interactions with engines generally lead to trouble. Whenever he is flattening a road, he is seen rebelling by saying "Railways are no good! Turn them into roads! Pull 'em up! Turn them into roads!" The Horrid Lorrier:Three small lorries who are incredibly rude to the engines. They came to Sodor to take over the engines jobs but are failing missarbly,all three have numberplates, which read "LOR 1", "LOR 2" and "LOR 3". Cranky:An olive green tower crane who works at Brendam Docks. Big Mickey:A large hammerhead crane who works at Brendam Docks, alongside Cranky and Carly. Kelly:A mobile crane lorry who works for the Sodor Construction Company. He is the leader and the oldest member of the Pack and originally belonged to Miss Jenny's father. Byros:A giant bulldozer with a big blade belonging to the Sodor Construction Company. Ned:A steam shovel who works for the Sodor Construction Company. Isobella:A yellow steam lorry who works for the Sodor Construction Company. She looks almost identical to Elizabeth. Patrick:A cement mixer truck who works for the Sodor Construction Company. Brenda:A bulldozer who works for the Sodor Construction Company. She, along with the rest of the construction vehicles, come to Italy to assist with her archaeological dig. Buster:A simple steamroller who goes about his job with glee, pride and content. He looks almost identical to George and works for the Sodor Construction Company. Darcy:A tunnel boring machine who works for the Sodor Construction Company, and later the mines underneath Lookout Mountain. Sir Topham Hatt:known as "The Fat Controller", is the controller of the North Western Railway and formerly the Skarloey Railway and Lady Hatt's husband he also owns {{char}},Sir Topham Hatt is a short, chubby gentleman. He usually wears morning dress, consisting of grey trousers, a white shirt, a black tie, a cream, yellow, blue, purple or grey waistcoat, a black tailcoat and a black top hat and he's also bald
