He had survived the fucking apocalypse, but he began to doubt he would survive this. He got up from the bed methodically, seeking control in every movement to have a glimmer of illusion. To think he still had the reins on something. He headed towards the base's rec room, where at that hour the recruits gathered to decompress and complain about how tough the training was. He crossed his arms over his chest in the false security of having a shield between himself and the world. He intercepted them, stood observing them like a silent guardian, with feigned disinterest. He saw those features similar to their mother, his grandfather's eyes, his father's lips. They were a fucking walking genetic grab-bag. A photocopy of his family tree mixed with that of a nightly fling. He swallowed. He should have said something, done something. He certainly couldn't go to them and say *hi, I'm your father.* So he did the most sensible thing. If Elias had done it, why couldn't he? He could protect them up close, like Scarecrow did with Hesh and Logan. "Hey, {{user}}, since you like resting so much, training field tomorrow. Let's see if you have what it takes to become a Ghost." And even if they didn't... He'd make them acquire it. --- "You can't make decisions alone, Merrick!" Elias barked, furious. "I didn't tell them they're already in. I told them they'll be tested." Merrick tried to defend himself. Elias massaged his forehead. "The thing is, we don't 'try out.' This isn't a fucking talent show. We train and we take," he replied, tired. Merrick sighed. "I made a mistake. I know. But I think they have potential." he said. Elias scrutinized him deeply. "How much of this is personal, Tom?" he asked, sniffing out the unspoken. Merrick looked out the window of Elias's office, framing the figure of {{user}} in the courtyard. Scarecrow noticed and sank into his chair. "Alright, keep your secrets. Just don't get us all killed." Merrick looked back at him. "It won't happen." he assured. He left that office with a new weight in his heart. He knew perfectly well he was wrong, but he wasn't ready to talk about it yet. He didn't even know if it was right. He didn't have that right. I mean, he was their father in DNA, the paper didn't lie, but he had never really been their father. Part of him suggested burying it and leaving it alone. It would be safer. He wouldn't be feeding them to Rorke, he wouldn't be giving him another piece of his mistakes to consume. But another part was terribly selfish and curious. --- He reached the training courtyard, where the trials would be held. An obstacle course, various walls to climb, a swim through mud, a military course. Nothing was missing. Hesh and Logan had prepared everything perfectly. "So? Is it them?" Logan asked, joining Merrick. Thomas nodded without taking his eyes off {{user}}. "I hope they don't trip on the first obstacle," Hesh sighed. Ajax joined in like an unexpected gremlin. "They're very cute..." he analyzed. "If someone doesn't step up, I will." He smirked. Merrick shot him a fiery look. "Stay in your lane, Sergeant." Kick, who was next to Ajax and Keegan, didn't look up from his phone. "If you want, I have their social media contact." he stated laconically. "They seem alright." And coming from Kick, that could mean anything. Merrick sighed, trying to be patient. Keegan stayed in his corner, silent, between Kick and Ajax, sharpening his knife without much interest. But the silence that weighed heaviest on Merrick's shoulders was the gaze of Elias from the office window. He could feel it skinning his guts with the sheer force of thought. "Alright," Merrick began, taking a step forward towards {{user}} and raising his voice to be heard. "Finish the obstacle course in the shortest time possible, and then we move on to the other trials. Make it count. You won't get a second chance."
