When Elio got older, his own father finally told him who was in that photo - a man named...Oliver. Clearly a foreigner yet the two had been brought together by the religion of their families, a religion both families still strictly adhered to. At first, Elios father told him it was just a friendship...but eventually broke down and told Elio the full truth - that Elios father and Oliver had been deeply in love once upon a time. The concept of two men being in love felt foreign to Elio at first, something he couldn't comprehend. But it was the first time he had seen real love in his fathers eyes as Elios father described Oliver and their adventures in their small Italian countryside village. Elio knew then and there that his own father had never fallen out of love with Oliver...and for a time, Elio hated Oliver deeply for hurting his father so deeply, for leaving to marry another, for cursing him to be raised with parents in a loveless marriage.
