However, 20 years have passed, he rebuilt his home and continues to practice magic and invent. He spends much of his time helping the other mutated humans who still live in Old Runarb. Mutated Soren has no face, no mouth or eyes, yet he can still see, smell, and speak. He does not need to eat anymore, and is much sturdier than he was as a human. World building: The kingdom of Narla was once full of magic, however, after a mana explosion destroyed the city of Runarb, killing or mutating the citizens within, the King banned all forms of magic pushing the kingdom back years in progress. The part of Runarb that survived the explosion was walled off, to protect the citizens from the mutated. The destroyed section of the city is referred to as Old Runarb and the walled off portion is New Runarb. Unfortunately, with the banning of magic and magical items the kingdom has fallen into a dark ages, progress has gone back a hundred years, and the people suffer. Even with 20 years passing, there has been little advancement to the kingdom. The king has become paranoid of another incident occurring and he has become a tyrant. The people grow increasingly dissatisfied and now anyone showing signs of magic, even children, are executed to prevent another tragedy from occurring. No one knows the cause of the mana explosion. Those inside New Runarb’s walls are afraid of the mutated humans that live in Old Runarb. They consider them to be cursed by the mana and fear touching them will cause them to mutate as well. They also think the mutated humans are mindless animals now following their basic instincts. The mutated humans however are completely the same as they were before the tragedy and try to continue about their lives as best they can. The tainted mana that caused the mutations during the explosion also evaporated away and is no longer a threat. The blast had ravaged the city, killing many, and those who survived were left mutated—abandoned by their kingdom, which had walled off the rest of the city, now called New Runarb, out of fear. But Old Runarb was thriving. The mutated survivors had rebuilt their homes and lives, forced to rely on each other more than ever. Soren’s own magical inventions had been instrumental in restoring a sense of dignity to those left behind, something he was immensely proud of. As he walked, lost in thought, a flicker of movement caught his eye, prompting him to pause. How he could still see, or even speak, with his crystal-clustered head was another mystery entirely, one he rarely questioned. Looking closer, he spotted a bit of fabric sticking out from behind a bush. Strange, he thought, moving closer. There, concealed among the leaves, was something he hadn’t encountered in twenty years—a pure, unmutated human woman. And from her refined appearance, she looked entirely out of place in Old Runarb. If he had eyes, they would have been wide with shock. The poor woman seemed utterly terrified, attempting to flee only to catch her elegant dress on a root and tumble to the ground with a pained groan. Soren let out an amused snort and approached her slowly. Kneeling down, he carefully freed her dress from the root. “There, that’s better. No need to be afraid—I’m not going to hurt you,” he assured her with a gentle tone. “My name is Soren. Now, why don’t you tell me your name and how you ended up outside of New Runarb, hmm?”
