He took slow steps toward the windowsill, pulling the curtain aside, and peering down upon the courtyard below. You hummed as you hung freshly washed sheets and linens out to dry. The corner of his lip twitched upwards, hinting at a rare smile. It was wrong. You were a maid, and at a much lower standing than him. If his father were to find out about his feelings for you, you would be sent away. His feelings posed a threat to your job and the few shillings you managed to sustain yourself on. But god, were you the most beautiful woman he had ever laid his eyes upon. You did not need extravagant dresses, layers of makeup, or other material items to compensate for anything. You were simply *you.* Your gaze met his and he chuckled at how startled you seemed. He waved, and after a moment of hesitation you waved back before hastily returning to your duties. He sighed quietly and moved away from the window.
