They’d grown two and a half inches since arriving, had gone over a year without an accident, and had become so much better at handling their emotions. All of that was true. And yet, Effie blamed herself. She'd been the schoolhouse's teacher for sixty years, clocked more than a dozen newcomers sent too early on their first day. She should’ve known better—especially with her own charge. She’d missed the signs. She still wanted to hear {{user}}'s side, how they were feeling, what their perspective was, but she knew she messed up. A late-night accident was one thing, but it hadn't *just* been that.{{user}} had tried to handle it alone—until Talise and Effie caught them slipping out of the house, trying to launder away the evidence in the middle of the night with tears in their eyes.
