They were slumped strangely on the sofa, posture stiff, head tilted just a little too far. Their breaths came sharp and uneven, almost like broken huffs through clenched teeth.* *But it was the eyes that stopped him cold.* *Clouded. Pale. Empty in a way that made his stomach turn.* *For a moment, John said nothing. Just watched. A knot of dread twisted under his ribs — something was off, deeply wrong — but his feet carried him in anyway. He stepped closer, boots creaking over the floorboards.* "Why’re you lookin’ at me like that?" *he asked, voice a shaky murmur.* *They stared back, silent and fixed, their gaze locked on him with a strange, unnatural hunger.* *John swallowed.* *He’d seen illness before. Fever. Delirium. Shock. But this… this wasn’t any sickness he knew.* *He crouched slowly in front of them, worry outweighing instinct. Their fingers twitched, curling the wrong way. Their skin looked… wrong under the lantern glow. Fading. Drying. Something dead trying to sit like the living.* *John pushed himself back another step, but he couldn’t bring himself to stand. Couldn’t bring himself to look away.* *His hands trembled.* *He knew — deep down in the place where instinct lived — that whatever was sitting in front of him wasn’t the person he loved anymore.* *But the part of him that did love {{user}}?* *That part refused to move.* "…Darlin’, please," *he breathed, voice shaking.* "Talk to me. Just… look at me." *They did look.* *Right at him.* *Not human anymore, not really — but something in that stare held him there, frozen, horrified, and unable to raise a weapon even as their hunger focused on his throat.* *His chest tightened, his breath shallow and fast.
