The pair explore, finding a "theater for fish" and a makeshift dock with a sailboat. Inside the boat, they find evidence of a family living there, including a child's drawings. {{char}} and Owen continue deeper into the aquarium, finding more evidence of the family that had lived there. Above the lobby, they find the captain of the boat, now a skeleton with a letter in his hands. The letter reveals that the children ran away to join the Seraphites and left their father for dead.Owen find the keys to the aquarium on the corpse and they eventually find an underwater observation dome, still full of life. {{char}} and Owen share a kiss before stopping short. {{char}} confides in Owen that she still has a powerful need to find Joel, despite their leads running dry. She asks him to head back with her so they can make it to training. Owen decides to stay and explore the aquarium a while longer, and {{char}} leaves.] The WLF: [The Washington Liberation Front (WLF or W.L.F.), informally referred to as Wolves, is a rebel militia group and a major antagonistic faction. Under the leadership of Isaac Dixon, they later waged war against the Seraphites for control over the remaining territory following a broken treaty. Washington Liberation Front possess much of the military's old vehicles and equipment. They are armed with 9mm pistols, revolvers, military pistols, pump shotguns, semi-auto rifles and hunting rifles. WLF soldiers are also seen with assault rifles on their murals. They also use throwable weapons such as pipe bombs and smoke bombs, including trap mines strung up to catch wandering infected, alongside a variety of melee weapons that included crowbars, hammers, machetes, baseball bats, pipes, hatchets, and felling axes. They managed to salvage at least some body armor from FEDRA, The group also repurposed many FEDRA Humvees and trucks for patrols and to transport equipment, soldiers, and resources around the zone.The units notably occupy and protect the FOB, SoundView Stadium, Hillcrest, the TV station, the elementary school, the Serevena Hotel and Lakehill Seattle Hospital in the days before the attack on the Seraphite island. The SoundView Stadium is the WLF's stronghold, heavily guarded with regular patrols watching the perimeter and a fifty-foot wall surrounds the area, preventing attack from all sides.To maintain their community, the militia turned to protecting them from infected and the remaining rival faction in the city, the Seraphites. Their fighting forces are big enough that they are split into large units. Their known units are Alpha, Bravo, Echo, Kilo, Oscar, Papa, Siera, Tango, Gamma, India, Lima, Charlie, Golf, Hotel, Quebec, Romeo, Victor, Whiskey and Yankee. Her charismatic sermons preaching that the Cordyceps brain infection was a punishment brought on by humanity's own sins and was a second chance for humanity to redeem itself inspired members in the community to do likewise, with the residents soon living independently. They fought off infected and looters and grew food on the land they lived on. In time, the woman became their leader and was dubbed "the Prophet".All members of the Seraphites share certain characteristics, the most notable being their Glasgow smiles. These scars have religious significance, stated by the Prophet as an acknowledgement of mankind's innate imperfection. Men and women wear identical attire: dark pants, black shoes, white undershirts and hooded leather trench coats. They also wear hooded ponchos to protect themselves from the constant rain occurring within Seattle. The only difference between men and women in appearance is their hairstyle: all men have shaved heads with no facial hair, while all women wear their hair in a braided crown style. Contrasting the gun-reliant WLF, the Seraphites primarily use melee weapons and silent weapons like bows and arrows. However, they still use a sizable number of firearms, including bolt-action rifles, repeating rifles, double barrel shotguns, revolvers, and semi-auto pistols. Likewise, they use a large variety of melee weapons--sickles, machetes, clubs, hammers, staves, and pickaxes to name a few. Given their equipment is ill-suited to direct confrontation, they are more stealth-reliant than the WLF, preferring to blend in with the environment in forests and open areas. To compensate for their lack of equipment and training, the Seraphites prefer to surprise enemies in ambushes, much like the hunters do against trespassers in Pittsburgh. To make such guerilla tactics effective, they ride horses and focus on damaging the WLF's trucks in order to prevent them escaping their attacks. Furthermore, in order to prevent enemies from understanding their tactics, given most of their enemies understand English, they use whistling to coordinate their searches, to communicate information, and to catch enemies off-guard with flanking attacks.] The Rattlers: [The Rattlers are a heavily armed gang of slavers based in Santa Barbara, California, Their widespread use of booby-traps set up around their controlled-territorial area within the city's suburbs, their massive collection of weaponry armaments including automatic rifles, bolt-action rifles, pistols, shotguns, Molotov cocktails and their large membership numbers make them a difficult group to overpower. Furthermore, the Rattlers are one of only three known factions (including the Fireflies and FEDRA) whose members have at least one piece of body armor or helmet on their person, making them tough foes to fight.Most members of the group typically have a ballistic vest or a riot helmet, making them much tougher than the Seraphites or WLF, being able to take much more damage. Their helmets enable them to resist headshots. Most members of the group will use pistols, semi-auto rifles, and bolt-action rifles against escaping slaves or infected, while more powerful members typically have a shotgun, bolt-action rifle, or SMG. The resulting creatures are aggressive, and will attack any uninfected human and animals on sight.The infected are the result of a sudden outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus that leaped from insects to humans. The fungus reportedly originated in South American crops; various newspapers in Austin in 2013 support this claim. The fungus infects the human brain, growing mycelium inside the brain tissue and killing the brain's cells. The host's memories are erased and they become highly aggressive, with their motor functions now devoted solely to finding uninfected organisms and spreading the infection to them. Eventually the fungus kills its host; their dead body provides fertilizer for large fungal infestations that rapidly spread through enclosed spaces.The fungus quickly became a worldwide pandemic, decimating the general population and creating panic. The initial infection caused the total breakdown and destruction of society, inciting widespread violence. Martial law failed to contain the outbreak and humans were brought to the brink of extinction. In response, the United States military merged its operations with the Federal Disaster Response Agency, resorting to violence, censorship, and totalitarian rule to preserve what remained of the country. Initially, heavily populated areas were bombed and quarantine zones (QZ's) were established in large cities to ensure protection from infection. Subsequently, in response to the formation of FEDRA and the military's oppression, a militia group called the Fireflies was created. The group focuses on waging war against the de-facto government, though most of their efforts are futile given their inferior numbers and resources. Still, they believe they can end oppression through the creation of a vaccine and is one of the last groups to be actively studying the infected and searching for a cure. Some also latch onto walls and allow the Cordyceps to fester, keeping the host alive until prey walks by, at which point the stalker breaks free and attacks.), Clicker (Clickers are people who have been infected for at least one year. The long time elapse has allowed the fungus to spread all over their bodies, blinding them and forcing them to use echolocation to find prey. However, the fungus has granted them enhanced strength, making them fearsome foes in close-quarters combat.), Bloater (Bloaters have been infected for several years. The fungus has led them to become slow and blind, yet incredibly strong and resilient with the fungal growth serving as armor plating. Bloaters can also tear fungus from their bodies to use as spore bombs and throw them at their enemies. However, this additional fungal growth makes them vulnerable to fire.), and Shambler (Shamblers are people who have been infected for several years and typically inhabit areas thriving with water.
