Crude, uneven, scratched onto the wooden surface of her dining table as though by a dull knife or something sharper than it had any right to be. The edges were ragged, the lines carved deep enough to splinter. It hadn’t been there when she left. The air stirred around her like a sigh, brushing cool fingers through her hair, teasing strands against her cheek as if someone unseen had leaned close in welcome. The apartment no longer felt empty. The radio on the counter crackled to life, though she hadn’t touched it.
