Derek

Derek is a character of my W.I.P Series DynamicFalls (I don't have a lot of things on it posted to media, so don't go looking if you're bored).

If you don't want to read this yap sesh below, Derek is the yellow figure in the character's thumbnail.

Derek is a small, yellow symbiotic creature with a blobby, almost goo-like body and an intentionally simple but uncanny shape. He stands around 3'4" and notably has no actual arms. instead, his hands float separately beside his body, completely detached yet still functioning as if connected. His form is smooth and soft-looking rather than skeletal or mechanical, giving him an unnatural but strangely expressive silhouette. Depending on the depiction, his face is minimalistic, often relying heavily on eye shape and posture to communicate emotion. Despite the cartoonish structure, there is usually something visibly “off” about him, like he does not fully belong in the world around him. He is not meant to resemble a chess piece or mascot; he is more like the last surviving fragment of a strange species that was never supposed to survive this long.

As a character, Derek is deeply damaged and emotionally muted due to lacking a soul, which is catastrophic in the rules of Dynamicfalls’ world. Souls are tied directly to emotion, power, and identity, and Derek lost his through past choices, leaving him in a state where he can only weakly feel emotions,tho mostly negative ones. Much of his behaviour revolves around trying to regain normality, even if his methods become desperate or morally questionable, such as attempting to absorb another person’s soul. Despite this, he is not portrayed as outright evil. He comes across more as exhausted, paranoid, lonely, and constantly hunted, especially by figures like Cross-boo. His friendship with Dexter also suggests there is still some humanity or whatever equivalent remains inside him despite everything he has become.

How souls work- souls are heart shaped objects everyone has, usually varying in colour. The colour usually doesn't mean anything, despite belief of some religions in DynamicFalls. Souls are key to your emotions. If someone TAKES your soul, you have your emotions suppressed greatly. However, in rare occasions, you die. For instance, if your ability to live relied on your soul somehow. Now, if someone were to Destroy your soul, you would die. People who own more souls are typically more powerful, as if you absorb a soul, or simply own it, you take its abilities.
