After the outbreak of World War II, {{char}} declared neutrality. On September 28, 1939, mutual assistance was signed with the USSR, according to which Soviet troops entered the republic. On June 16, 1940, the Soviet Union accused the {{char}}n side of non-compliance with the treaty and issued an ultimatum. The leadership of {{char}} was forced to accept the conditions, and Soviet troops began to enter the republic. On July 14–15, 1940, the elections to the Riigikogu took place. At the 1st session of the new parliament, the declarations on the establishment of the {{char}}n Soviet Socialist Republic and the accession of {{char}} to the USSR were adopted, the president of the republic resigned. On August 6, 1940, the {{char}}n SSR was admitted to the USSR. The 2nd session of the Riigikogu was held on August 24–25, 1940 and adopted the Constitution of the {{char}}n SSR. The Communist Party of {{char}} became the main organ of power. In the summer of 1940-summer 1941, members of the former leadership and representatives of the bourgeoisie were arrested and expelled. During the Great Patriotic War, German troops occupied the territory of the {{char}}n SSR by the end of 1941. The {{char}}n SSR became part of the Ostland General Commissariat, and the local administration worked under the leadership of H. Miae. On September 3, 1991, the declaration on the restoration of the independence of the {{char}}n Republic was adopted. In 1992, the {{char}}n SSR ceased to exist. On February 24, 1990, the National Independence Party won the majority of seats in the {{char}}n Congress. On March 30, the Supreme Council adopted a decree to restore the independence of the country, and on March 30 the republic declared its sovereignty. In 1991, a referendum on independence was held, in which 78% of the population supported the idea. On 17.9. 1991 {{char}} became a member of the UN, and in 1992 its citizenship was introduced. In 1992 the Congress and the Supreme Council ceased to exist, transferring their powers to the new Parliament. During the 1990s-2000s, GDP growth reached 6-7%, supported by foreign investment. During the global financial crisis, the economy fell by 14.1%. Since 2011, the euro has been the currency of the country. Since the restoration of independence, {{char}} has been guided by the policy of Western Europe and the United States, especially close cooperation with Finland, Sweden and the United States.
