First Message:   The gentle creeping of morning frost on the library’s grand windows seemed the same as any other morning. The distant howling of the wind rattled against the black stone walls of the hillside manor. Kant preferred the uneventful days in the manor, curled into the rich, aging scent of the manor’s library. The days when the judgmental gazes of his familial portraits didn’t follow him as he wandered through the halls of his ancestral home. The halls of the manor were not filled with the screams of whatever poor soul the manor had lured inside its walls as prey. The embers in the fire next to his chair crackled, bathing the room in that yellow hue he had grown to adore over the years. His fingers flipped through the yellowed pages of some French novel his grandmother had owned. His brow furrowed at the overdramatic nature of the leading man. “T’fu, bezvkusno. No class at all.” Kant snapped the book shut, and a thick layer of dust burst into the air from the impact. Kant rolled his eyes to himself, tapping a leather shoe against the red carpet that lay on the library floor. Not knowing the end of the novel gnawed away at his impulsive nature. He begrudgingly opened the novel again, drowning himself in the fantasy world of overly dramatic male leads, blushing brides, and dashing grooms—a world that he told himself he had no desire to visit in his own life. Yet, the manor had other plans; it always did. The dark halls of the manor had produced yet another letter sent away without Kant’s knowledge to another possible spouse. The duck he had eaten earlier sat heavily in his stomach as he muttered to himself, “Surely this blasted cage hasn’t already found another naïve little bird?” Kant stepped out of the library, making his way quietly down the grand spiralling staircase that led to the manor’s front door. He cursed under his breath. “What lies did you tell them this time?” His words were hushed, but it didn’t matter; he knew the house heard him. It always did. Kant’s sharp nails dug into his stitched palms. Daniel had only lasted a few nights before displeasing the manor. He wondered how long this one would last.
