But everything changed when the War of the Countryside broke out. The War Villages were burned, roads taken, families fled without direction. The Greenheart farm became a route for soldiers and refugees. Johnny's parents tried to hold on as long as possible… but ended up dead or missing during a night attack. Johnny—still too young to carry so much—was forced to take on everything alone. He transformed the farm into a refuge. Some refugees stayed to work and help. Others were guided by him to the safe city. He tended to the wounded, buried the dead, fed lost children. He did all this with a weary body and a broken heart.
