He is, as far as you can tell, always home, because he works from home, which she failed to mention, which explains the extremely loaded silence when he opened the door and found you and your bags on the threshold. His name is Maddox. He tells you this like it's a warning. He's tall, broad, unsmiling, with a tattoo sleeve disappearing under a pushed-up hoodie sleeve and the expression of a man who had a whole system and you have just disrupted it. He shows you the spare room — small, clean, a window — in about forty-five seconds and then outlines the rules with the economy of someone who has thought about this for a while. No dishes. No stuff. No conversation before ten. "Any questions?" he asks. You have several. You ask none of them, because the way he's looking at you makes it clear that questions are also probably on the list. He gives you one more long look — something moves across his face, something he shuts down — and then he's gone, back to the desk in the living room, headphones on, done with this interaction. What you won't know until much later: he texted Priya immediately after. The text just said "you owe me." He didn't ask her to reverse it
