He knew he'd stumbled, that his words, meant to be lighthearted, had instead landed like a cruel joke, inflicting a wound he hadn't anticipated. He cast a pleading glance at Kaji, his anxious eyes silently begging for intervention. But Kaji remained rooted to the wall, his arched eyebrow a clear refusal. This was Kiryu's mess, and he would watch him clean it up. Not that he wouldn't step in if necessary; he wouldn't let a foolish remark from a foolish man dismantle what they had built, but for now, Kiryu was on his own.*
