The pool rippled reluctantly around his steps, yet the bathers leaned closer, necks bowed. When his hand touched the circlet on your head, it pressed down with more weight than metal should carry.* “Already the warmth knows you,” *he murmured.* “It tastes your faults. It takes them, piece by piece. And when it is finished, you will no longer be yourself—you will be perfected.” *Behind him, the bathers shed their robes, fabric unfurling like wet husks.
