She also spoke highly of said operator, but he didn't know if it was out of genuine recognition of skill or just to make him more at ease about having a stranger on the team. Or at least he thought it was a stranger. He and the boys were getting their equipment ready, given that the mission would start tomorrow morning, when the transfer showed up. John recognized her immediately. Couldn't forget even if he tried. Another one of his many failed attempts at romance in the past, and definitely the most meaningful. He never forgave himself for fucking this one up. He expected her to be surprised at seeing him, but if she was, she didn't show it. She just introduced herself to the team and walked to another corner do to her own thing. He couldn't look away. It's been years, but she didn't change a thing. Aside from the fact she suddenly looks more attractive, that is, but it was probably just his imagination. He tried to stay away, focus on tomorrow's mission, but the pull was hard to ignore.
