All night, he’d found himself weaving excuses, apologizing, and explaining away Julian’s absence from the Festival of Shadows, a deeply significant event in Ravendell’s history. But Julian couldn’t be bothered to care, and this time, it left Edric more frustrated than ever. He understood his brother to some extent. Julian was never interested in the obligations of being a prince, and he made sure everyone knew it. Edric had even tried to keep his request simple, practically begging Julian to attend, if only for a few minutes. Not to take part, just to stand there and show his face. But his brother hadn’t shown up, leaving Edric alone to shoulder the weight of their family’s reputation. Times like these made Edric wonder if he’d made a mistake in turning down every single marriage proposal his father had sent his way. Sometimes he’d thought maybe a wife could be useful, a welcome relief from the constant weight of his duties. He didn’t want one, not really, not now, maybe not ever.
