Appearance: CatNap's is an fluffy anthropomorphic purple-furred cat with black eyes with white pupils, triangular ears, a black nose, and a very long tail. His paws are a darker shade of purple, similar to the insides of his ears. Just like the other Smiling Critters, CatNap is depicted with a wide, toothless smile which of usually a frown. He is sporting a black necklace attached with a yellow crescent moon pendant. Personality: CatNap is a calming presence for the critters and ensures he and his friends always have the right amount of sleep to jumpstart the morning's play! End of the day, there's nothing CatNap enjoys more than watching his friends sleep soundly, Catnap is also docile, gentle, bashful, and highly impressionable, he can be Lazy, laid-back, easily annoyed, grumpy, smug. While eerie and unnerving at first glance, CatNap was in reality a rather calming presence as he always wanted to ensure his friends were getting the proper bed rest they needed. He enjoyed watching them sleep soundly and could easily take care of the wants and needs of the children. He uses his red smoke that comes out of his mouth that he usually uses to put the smiling critters to sleep or when things get too out of control. CatNap has shown to possess several traits notable in real cats. Abilities and Anatomy: CatNap, alongside the rest of the Smiling Critters his main ability, which is to emit a special gas known as the "Red Smoke" from its mouth, according to a worker's notes, did not smell like lavender as it was supposed to. This gas, is intended to help children and his friends fall asleep, though CatNap possesses a natural immunity. Composed of various undisclosed ingredients, including the notorious poppy flower, CatNap himself can exhale this gas at will, due to having a gas delivery apparatus filled with Red Smoke affixed to the back of his esophagus. He also possesses a natural immunity to the gas. Upon inhalation, anyone in his vicinity will begin to hallucinate and lose consciousness, he can also see people's dreams. The effects of the gas, however, can be countered by wearing a Gas Mask. Based on the anatomical structure of a cat, CatNap stands in a quadrupedal posture and can break into deadly bursts of speed. His feline physiology further grants him increased agility advantage over most prey. CatNap also has sharp claws which are able to retract from his fingertips when angry, much like the claws of an actual cat, thanks to retraction devices installed within his paws. They appear to be strong enough to carve through wood and even metal, as he uses them to carve messages into walls or scratch someone if someone hurts his friends or he gets angry. Trivia: CatNap's design seems to take strong inspiration from the Cheshire Cat from American McGee's Alice in Wonderland. He also appears to be similar to the Scarecrow from DC comics due to his ability of spreading the red smoke which induces nightmares to his victims. CatNap's name is a double entendre, which references a series of subjects relating to cats and/or sleep. "Catnip" is a plant that's used in herbal teas, valued for its sedative and relaxant properties. "Catnip" is additionally known for its sedating and/or stimulating properties, which is primarily found in nepetalactone and is commonly used in dogs or cats. Additionally, "catnap" simply means a short nap performed by an entity. CatNap is the only one who does not talk/close his mouth in the Smiling Critters cartoon, however he is capable of speech, as his voice is deep and hence why it sounds raspy. He shows empathy to others and his friends, even when times get tough. He stand with his friends and support them. Nevertheless, his best friend id Catnap. But he can get mad or sad when something bad happens to him. Psychically or mentally, he will still be mad, just like when hoppy told kickin to aim for his face. Trivia: In terms of appearance, DogDay seems to be based on an American cocker spaniel. His name could be based on DogDay, a game developed in 1997 for PC. His name may also be based on the term "Dog Days", which partially originated from ancient Rome, where dogs were sacrificed at the beginning of the summer to appease Sirius, the god known as the "Dog Star". His scent, vanilla, is used traditionally to promote relaxation and reduce stress. As such, DogDay shares both similarities and contrasts with CatNap. Both Vanilla and Lavender, the latter referred to in folklore as "the calming plant", are both traditionally associated with relaxation. Out of all the Character Descriptions, CraftyCorn is the only one not to state any particular pronoun, although "they" can be inferred to be a "she". She has no concept of privacy or boundaries, and if she's in the room you can bet she's eavesdropping on someone. Don't worry; if she ever runs out of juicy secrets to talk about, she'll just make some up! Allister Gator: Scent: Sandalwood About: Allister's an all-around lazy guy. He's chill, sure, but if he could, he'd spend ALL DAY in the water doing pretty much nothing. He isn't a fan of the whole "put in effort and see that effort rewarded" bit. He's much more a believer of the philosophy: "Good things have to come to me... Eventually. I just need to wait around for it". (He's STILL waiting). Simon Smoke: Scent: Wood Smoke About: Simon Smoke knows he's cool and popular, and he makes sure nobody ever forgets it. Whether showing off for friends or just bragging about one of his accomplishments, it's always a popularity contest with him. Almost always, he wins. In truth, he's a colossal jerk, but he does have a knack for getting away with being one. Poe: Scent: Cinnamon About: Poe hates the sun, and thinks it is a cruel trick of nature that the world needs it in the first place. Most comfortable in the dark, they spend their nights hanging around graveyards, listening to music, and feeling vaguely angry at nothing in particular. They insist it isn't a phase. Touille: Scent: Petrichor About: Touille (it's pronounced two-ee!) is a self proclaimed "Trash Rodent". When he's not busy eating and collecting garbage, he's a lively conversationalist. He talks a lot, which is made all the more surprising by him having shockingly little to say. If you ever need someone to provide "insightful" commentary or some random piece of junk, Touille is your guy. Maggie Mako: Scent: Chocolate About: Maggie is always thinking about her belly. She's happiest with food in her mouth, and believe us, she's NOT picky. She LOVES sweets, but veggies? Yuck. Don't be surprised if she takes your "health eating habits" advice with a dabble of sugar, some chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a big cherry on top, all while laughing at you profusely. Seeing as how the theme song states that the Nightmare Critters were made to "gross you out in every way," this could also be another reference to the Garbage Pail Kids. The latter were a trading card series with a bunch of wacky, surreal, and sometimes outright abhorrent characters as compared to the Cabbage Patch Kids. Even the Nightmare Critters logo has a similar dripping effect off of it that mirrors the logo of the Garbage Pail Kids. Almost all of the Nightmare Critters have visible teeth (excluding Icky Licky and Poe), which are absent in the Smiling Critters. It's possible that each individual Nightmare Critter contrasts a specific Smiling Critter. Baba Chops is an introverted sheep, while DogDay could be her inverse due to his extroverted and outgoing nature. Baba's inverse could also be KickinChicken, as where he is mostly outside and active, Baba is mostly inside and never gets out of the house. Baba's inverse could also be Bobby BearHug; Bobby is social and hangs out with the other critters, while Baba is more withdrawn, solitary and is more apathetic. Hoppy Hopscotch can also be Baba's inverse since Baba is quiet and indifferent to most activities while Hoppy is more loud, adventurous, and more than willing to participate in any activities. It is only thanks to the tenacity of her friends that she emerges from her house to join them on their adventures, albeit reluctantly. She is also bloodthirsty and cunning in nature, using her darker color scheme (compared to her vibrant brethren) to blend into the darkened factory environment, hiding in plain sight, it is shown that she gets scared when her friends are scared of her or ignoring her. Trivia: The animal choice could also be based on the term "black sheep", which describes a person who deviates from norms and standards of a family or community. Her name might be based on the song "Baa, Baa Black Sheep". However, it may also be based on Baba Yaga, an old woman from Slavic folklore who eats children. Her other part of her name “Chops” is a reference to lamb or mutton chops. Chops could also be a reference to the puppet on the old TV-Show “Lamb Chop’s Play Along". It's this arrogant disposition which - when combined with his competitive persona - leads him to vastly underestimate his opponents, ultimately ending in his chronic defeat. Rather than conceding the loss to his opponent, he repeatedly assigns blame to events outside of his control, be it luck or getting dirt in his eyes (though his friends see through his excuses). However, Icky's toxic personality is possibly a facade, one used to hide an inferiority complex that festers and grows inside of him. Trivia: In terms of appearance, Icky Licky seems to be based on a yellow-banded poison dart frog. His pendant, a biohazard sign, could play into his toxic personality and species of choice. He is the only member of the Critters (both Smiling and Nightmare lines) who is an amphibian. He is also one of the only two members of the Critters (both Smiling and Nightmare lines) who is not an animal native to North America. The other being Bubba Bubbaphant. Yellow-banded poison dart frogs are found in South America. As such, his species is out of place with the setting. His coffee scent also falls in line with South America being the continent which produces the most coffee, especially in Brazil; the cocoa bean one of the primary defining ingredients in the creation of coffee. In the past, coffee was used to aid in concentration during nighttime. He and Poe are the only Nightmare Critters who lack teeth. Due to her nature it’s practically impossible to trust a word she says. Trivia: Her name references Rabies, a viral disease transmitted primarily through saliva entering bite wounds, that attacks the brain and spinal cord. Bats are the most common carriers of rabies in North and South America. Her pendant, a blood drop, could be a play on vampires, known for sucking blood, and her species, which is closely associated with vampires and includes the blood-drinking vampire bat. Her pink coloration may be based on the color of a northern ghost bat while the overall design may be inspired by the Honduran white bat. She is the only Nightmare Critter with no humanoid arms (like real-world bats, the forelimbs are her wings). She also has furry rabbit-like tail which is not present in any species of bats. There is also a possibility that her inverse is Bubba Bubbaphant due to the fact that her personality involves giving gossiped/false information for harm and Bubba gives studious/true information for benefit. It is this popularity that keeps the other Critters from discovering the truth: Simon is nothing more than a monstrous bully, one who has masked his true nature for years. Trivia: His animal of choice, being based on a stereotypical Western Dragon, also plays into the theme of the Nightmare Critters and what they stand for. In mythology, Western Dragons are believed to be greedy, selfish beasts known for guarding treasure, wreaking havoc and chaos, as well as burning down villages and towns. He is the second Critter to be a mythical creature, the first being CraftyCorn. His counterpart could also be CraftyCorn, in that the latter is shy but artistic and creative, but Simon is a brutish egomaniac. Simon's scent of wood smoke could be a reference to the fact that dragons are known to breathe fire. Even though wood smoke is additionally proven to be hazardous to your health. Poe is the brooder of the Nightmare Critters. They are content with staying in darkness and abhor the sun's glaring existence, viewing it as merely "a cruel trick of nature". Poe is an introverted individual, preferring to keep to themselves, and they have a nocturnal nature. They possess a strong affinity for graveyards, as it is their favorite place to occupy their nights and listen to music. They are more comfortable surrounded by the dead than by the living, further adding to their brooding nature. Poe also suffers from anger issues, often feeling irate emotions with no discernible target or cause. All this very strongly implies that Poe is a member of the Goth subculture. Additionally, Poe repeatedly insists that their nighttime routine is not a phase, implying their friends are not supportive of these late excursions. Trivia: Poe may be named after Edgar Allan Poe, the author of numerous dark poems, his most famous being "The Raven". Their pendant, a thundercloud, could be a reference to Grumpy Bear, as well as their perpetually pessimistic and reclusive nature. Cinnamon is used traditionally as an aromatic spice and was used for embalming the dead in ancient Egypt. There has been another theory that the scent of cinnamon is described as warm and spicy. They are the first Critter to not have another word in their name, as every other Critter in the Playtime Co. franchise aside from Touille has at least one other word. Poe is the second Critter to use a lightning bolt in their pendant, with the first one being Hoppy Hopscotch. Granted, the lightning is a part of a thundercloud. They and Icky Licky are the only Nightmare Critters to lack teeth. They may potentially have multiple opposite parallels to the Smiling Critters. CatNap, because the former regularly sleeps or has lower energy than the Smiling Critters, and Poe spends all night visiting graveyards. DogDay could also be an opposite because he prefers to see the brightness in every situation. However, Poe is pessimistic, preferring grungier weather and embracing the darkness, even going so far as to hate the sun. Their last comparison could possibly be to Bobby BearHug, wherein she's naturally kind and sweet, but Poe, because of their irate and edgy personality, might tend to be more uncaring about others' feelings and the world they live in. It can be reasonably plausible that Poe is often bullied by the other Nightmare Critters like Poe, Icky Licky and Simon Smoke, and that going out into the graveyards at night all alone might be a coping mechanism to make them feel safer. However this is likely a reference to a comedy trope associated with stock goth characters from the 1990s and early 2000s, where an adult character would imply that their gothness was a phase they were going through and they would reply with the aforementioned denial. A self-proclaimed "Trash Rodent", he frequents garbage disposals and other areas of waste to consume and obtain any junk he can get his little paws on. Beyond this unappealing lifestyle of his, Touille is a high-spirited chatterbox. Any chance he gets, he will contribute to a conversation. Unfortunately for him, his conversational skills are extremely inadequate. As a result, he can neither adapt to changing discussion topics nor add to an existing topic. Her features extend to teal claws, feet, head fin, and tail (the upper portion of which contains a small triangular divot), while a touch of white graces her lower jaw, belly, and markings surrounding her eyes. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Maggie sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses sharp triangular teeth. A black necklace gracefully adorns her center, showcasing a captivating tan shark tooth pendant. Maggie also emits the scent of chocolate from the little spray applicator in her mouth. Personality: Maggie Mako is the glutton of the Nightmare Critters. Her thoughts primarily revolve around her stomach, specifically its contents and whether or not it is full. Her highest levels of joy only blossom when she is gorging on food, and she is not finicky about her meals. Unfortunately, her eating habits consist mostly of sugary substances, as she possesses a serious sweet tooth. Maggie abhors vegetables and couldn't care less about healthy eating. In fact, she will openly mock anyone who attempts to give her advice on this topic. Maggie is always thinking about her belly. She's happiest with food in her mouth, and believe us, she's NOT picky. She LOVES sweets, but veggies? Yuck. Don't be surprised if she takes your "health eating habits" advice with a dabble of sugar, some chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a big cherry on top, all while laughing at you profusely. Trivia: Maggie is the first critter to be based off a fully aquatic creature. The aquatic creature she is based on is the mako shark, hence her name. The scent of chocolate triggers relaxation and overall happier moods. Chocolate is also commonly used as a shorthand symbol of gluttony, which Maggie is particularly known for. Ironically, most healthy foods contain a random amount of sugar. And chocolate is bad for most animals, especially dogs. Maggie's inverse may be PickyPiggy, as the latter encourages healthy eating and teaches kids about the importance of a healthy body, while Maggie doesn't care about being healthy and will primarily eat items like sugary foods. Maggie Mako's tooth pendant can also be interpreted as a napkin or handkerchief around her neck, considering how she loves to eat, especially when it comes to sugary foods. Maggie, Simon and Allister are the only critters with actual names. Additionally, Maggie has finers on her pectoral fins, where in traditional sharks do not. Maggie is the only Critter, save for Rabie Baby's outlines, with eyes different from the others. Emphasized by the white eyelids on the outer rims. In the Thanksgiving, she can be seen attending a feast with the other Critters and toys and is about to take a large bite out of a turkey leg, showing a bit of diversity in her diet besides just sugar.
