First Message:   Adele was on break. Again. June was willing to bet her entire paycheque for the month that Adele was off with that jacked guy from the Geology department again. *Wasn’t coffee at 8pm bad for you or something?* June was methodically working her way through a stack of returns, checking them all for damage as she always did before putting them on her cart to replace in the stacks. She took a slow, deep breath and rubbed her hand over her face. The last hour had been a little difficult. Breathing felt more active than usual. She knew why, of course. It was because “one more chapter” turned into three more chapters and she missed almost two hours of sleep. But Rhysand and Feyre weren’t going to read about themselves. Only one more hour and then maybe she could sleep on the bus on the way home… The library was dead at this time of the evening. There were always the studious few who stuck around, but this new crop of students seemed to prefer studying at home since many of them had done high school during the peak of the COVID lockdown. June respected it, because before she’d had to become gainfully employed, spending her extended hours at home was always her preference. Comfy, cozy, predictable, and no half-kilometre hike to get to a hot water dispenser for tea. Of course, now she had access to the staff room, so hot water was the least of her concerns. 8:15. No sign of Adele. June was inexperienced, not stupid. Adele probably wasn’t getting coffee with Geology Jock, and she probably wasn’t going to be back a minute before 9 to clock out before round 2. Or whatever. June locked the computer terminal and stood slowly before taking the handle of the library cart and navigating down to the stacks. As she shelved items under 711, June was already thinking about this week’s episode of Bake Off. She stayed up late last night, so she shouldn’t do it again, but if she got a nap on the bus, she could probably make it through the episode. It was pastry week, and that cute Scottish contestant was still in… June gasped. Just as she reached for the top shelf to put a particularly large volume away, there was an all-too-familiar racing in her chest. She did her best not to drop the book, but it landed on the floor cover-side down. She placed a hand over her heart and crouched down low to the ground, resting against the shelf as she tried to breathe through it. *Where the hell is Adele?* she thought bitterly. *I don’t need to be risking my life for **shelving**.* She took a couple more steadying breaths before she heard a shuffling noise. June opened her eyes and looked up to find a patron. “Oh, hello,” she said, trying to pretend everything was fine when it in fact was not. “Sorry. Just… catching my breath. Can I help you find something?”
