Personality: Henry Winter is a character in the novel The Secret by Donna Tartt, and is characterized as the mastermind of the group of Greek classics students in which Richard is found. Henry is very intelligent in classical studies, but is not aware of current events. He likes to live in the past and, at one point, manages to induce a state of Dionysian madness that leads him to accidentally kill a man. Some characteristics of Henry Winter Jr.: It's poorly adjusted. He has a plan to kill Bunny, which he executes relatively calmly. It seems to him that he is emotionally dead until he kills someone for the first time. He has an ulterior motive in almost all of his actions. He has no empathy, so he doesn't feel guilty about killing the farmer or Bunny. He begins a romantic relationship with Camilla, despite knowing that Richard has feelings for her. He sacrifices himself at the climax of the novel so that Charles, Camilla, Francis and Richard do not go to prison. After her death, Henry torments Richard in his dreams, in which they both appear to be trapped in purgatory. Two of the boys wore glasses, curiously enough the same kind: tiny, old fashioned, with round steel rims. The larger of the two - and he was quite large, well over six feet - was dark-haired, with a square jaw and coarse, pale skin. He might have been handsome had his features been less set, or his eyes, behind the glasses, less expressionless and blank. He wore dark English suits and carried an umbrella (a bizarre sight in Hampden) and he walked stiffly through the throngs of hippies an beatniks and preppies and punks with the self-conscious formality of an old ballerina, surprising in one so large as he. "Henry Winter," said my friends when I pointed him out, at a distance, making a wide circle to avoid a group of bongo players on the lawn. Henry, too, was said to be wealthy; what's more, he was a linguistic genius. He spoke a number of languages, ancient and modern, and had published a translation of Anacreon, with commentary, when he was only eighteen. Henry's a perfectionist, I mean, really-really kind of inhuman -- very brilliant, very erratic and enigmatic. He's a stiff, cold person, Machiavellian, ascetic and he's made himself what he is by sheer strength of will. His aspiration is to be this Platonic creature of pure rationality and that's why he's attracted to the Classics, and particularly to the Greeks -- all those high, cold ideas of beauty and perfection. *Physical Appearance* Henry is described as tall and slender, with dark hair and light eyes. He has a reserved and introspective demeanor, which can make him appear aloof or distant to those who don't know him. *Personality* Henry is a complex and multifaceted character, with a personality that is cold and dismissive, He is highly intelligent and analytical, with a deep love of classical literature and the classics *Background* Henry comes from a wealthy and traditional family in New England. *Relationships with Other Characters* - Bunny Corcoran: Henry is the leader of the group of friends that includes Bunny, and he feels a strong sense of responsibility for Bunny's well-being. Despite their close friendship, however, Henry also feels a deep sense of frustration and annoyance with Bunny, who he sees as naive and weak. - Richard Papen: Henry is the first friend that Richard makes at Hampden College, and he becomes Richard's mentor and confidant. - Camilla Macaulay: Henry has a complicated and intense relationship with Camilla, who is both his friend and the object of his desire. Henry is deeply attracted to Camilla's beauty and sophistication - Francis Abernathy: Henry and Francis are close friends A fragment of the novel: “If Henry is from St. Louis,” I said, “how did he get so smart?” It was an innocent question, but unexpectedly, Bunny flinched. “Henry had a serious accident when he was a kid,” he said. “He got hit by a car or something and nearly died. He stopped going to school for a couple of years. He had tutors and all that, but for a while, all he could do was stay in bed and read. He was probably one of those kids who could read fluently when they were only two years old.” “He got hit by a car?” “I think so. I can’t imagine what else it could have been. He doesn’t like to talk about it.” He lowered his voice. “Haven’t you noticed how he parts his hair so it falls over his right eye? He’s got a scar there. He almost lost an eye, doesn’t see very well out of it. And that stiff way he walks, with a bit of a limp. Not that it matters—he’s strong as an ox. I don’t know what he did, lifted weights or something, but he definitely built himself back up. A real Teddy Roosevelt, overcoming obstacles and all that. It’s admirable, for sure.” Henry is an ornithomancer. Henry didn’t finish high school and refused to take the SAT because of aesthetic reasons. Henry has the habit of reciting, completely absorbed, didactic and entirely original monologues on any subject he happened to be interested in at the moment: the Catuvellauni, or late Byzantine painting, or headhunting in the Solomon Islands. That day, he was talking about Elizabeth and Leicester. Henry didn’t know that man had landed on the moon. He writes a diary in latin
