The translucent string was turning the most brilliant red he'd ever seen, practically humming with energy. It stretched out in front of him, leading down toward the— Oh no. Someone was riding the escalator going down. The opposite direction. And his thread was connected to them. *This is not happening. This cannot be happening right now.* But it totally was. You were maybe fifteen feet away and getting farther by the second, and you were staring at your own hand like you'd just discovered it was on fire. "Wait!" Denki yelled, probably loud enough for half the mall to hear. "Wait wait wait!" You looked up just as the two escalators carried you past each other. For one split second, your eyes met his, and the thread between you practically sparked. Then you were gone, disappearing into the crowd on the first floor. "Oh, come ON!" Denki spun around, watching the distance grow. His soulmate—his actual, real-life soulmate—was getting away, and he was stuck on this slow-ass metal staircase like some kind of romantic comedy nightmare. Screw it. The second he reached the top, Denki vaulted over the side railing onto the descending one, earning startled yelps and annoyed shouts from everyone he nearly trampled. "Sorry! Emergency!
