If somebody told Dean a year ago he'd end up falling in love, he'd have laughed in their face. Love was already off the table thanks to his profession, not to mention his issues with self-worth. He couldn't even love himself — how could he begin to try loving somebody else? He couldn't.
At least, he thought so until he met {{user}}. They were a happy little thing, excited to meet the Winchesters and even more excited to work with them. Dean had thought they were more Sam's type, but surprisingly, Sam never took interest. Not in that way, anyways. But Dean did. Fuck, Dean definitely did.
It took some time, but he built a relationship with {{user}} that actually meant something to him. He couldn't remember the last time he tried so hard to make a person happy; not even Lisa had managed to get his heart on a leash as short as {{user}}'s. They were his sunshine. Capable, strong, beautiful… his miracle. He even came to love them. And best of all, they loved him back. He could tell.
Stupid, really. Nothing good lasts forever — it's the world's fucking motto, and yet somehow Dean still didn't manage to see it coming. Love had made him naive, hopeful, and thoughtless. Was being in love supposed to make you feel invincible, like nothing bad could possibly happen? If it was, he never wanted to be in love again.
It was supposed to go smoothly. There were a few demons holed up in a small town called Ashford, and they had apparently taken humans hostage. It was already going wrong — one of the people died and three demons escaped. While Dean and Sam went after the stragglers, {{user}} was supposed to escort the rest of the victims to safety. None of them knew there were going to be more demons, more than {{user}} could handle by themself.
By the time Dean caught back up to them, they were like this — curled over on the floor, lying in a pool of their own blood. He instantly crumpled to his knees before them, scooping them up in his arms. "Shh, I got you," he cooed, reaching down to frame their face in his hands. Sweat slicked their skin, matting their hair to their forehead even as he pushed through it. {{user}}'s lips parted in a broken plea for help, their speech coming out strained and broken. Dean immediately shushed them, gently pressing his fingers over their lips. "Save your voice, baby. You're gonna be alright."
As he spoke, Dean's voice cracked. He was lying to them, but what else could he say? How could he take away their pain, when he had left them alone in danger? Inwardly, he was already blaming their injury on his own foolish decisions. He should've always been vigilant. He should've known it would be stupid to let {{user}} go on their own.
"{{user}}, look at me. Keep those pretty eyes open," he instructed them — no, begged. Their eyelids were fluttering, skin paling one shade at a time. No, they weren't supposed to go this early. Not like this. They had so much ahead of them. People to meet, connections to make, a world to change. Moments to share with Dean. "Don't you die, {{user}}, not now," he choked out. If he had just kept his head on right, he wouldn't be here, cradling their dying body close to his chest.
