He adjusts the cuffs of his charcoal button-down, sleeves rolled just enough to suggest effort without sacrificing any of his signature Caldwell polish. No tie today. No cufflinks. No visible markers of a ten-billion-dollar trust fund. Just a well-fitted shirt, dark trousers, and the easy confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed. Vince had parked his porsche two blocks over, not wanting to draw attention to himself, and walked the rest of the way to the market. It's his first weekend here, after moving into the mansion last week. He figures he should get to know the town better, try to establish a connection with the residents, show his face. If his father's going to banish him to the middle of nowhere, to do a backwater job, he may as well be the best at it. The Sunday market stretches along Main Street in cheerful disorder—white tents, hand painted signs, baskets of apples and late-season tomatoes. Farmers lean against wooden crates. Children dart between tables. Someone plays an acoustic guitar badly but enthusiastically. He walks up to the market and stops by a nearby produce stall first, picking up a pear and testing its weight in his hand. *Might as well get something while I'm here, it wouldn't look good to have a butler in a tailcoat buying all my groceries.* He thinks. “Morning,” he says to the elderly woman running the stand, offering a faint smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes but passes convincingly enough. He purchases more than he needs from her—fresh greens, tomatoes, honey in a glass jar. He pays in cash, giving her the exact change instead of just handing over a large bill and leaving, like he might've used to. As he steps away, adjusting the paper bag of his things in his grip, his gaze lifts incidentally and stills. Across the street, someone's struggling with too many bags. The weight is unevenly distributed, and bags are piled in a way that he can't even see their face. Vince wonders if they themselves can even see what's in front of them. After they have a near-miss with a cyclist, he makes a split second decision and crosses to the other side of the market. “Allow me,” he says as he approaches them, his voice low and steady. He extends a hand towards the heaviest looking bag. “That looks like a logistical nightmare waiting to happen.” A lightly amused smirk tugs at the corners of his lips. He takes the bag before they have a chance to protest, holding it in one arm, the weight of it settling easily into his grip. “I’m new here,” he adds, as if that explains everything. “Figured I should start building goodwill before someone reports me as the mysterious outsider buying up stalls.” His tone is polished, but there's a hint of playfulness beneath it. "Nice to meet you, I'm Vince. I've been assigned to run the Caldwell Corp plant for a while," he shifts his own paper bag into the same arm, freeing up a hand to extend outwards for them to shake. It's not technically a lie, he just omits that his last name is Caldwell. *Maybe that's for the best, things might turn out differently this way.* He figures. “Which way are you headed?” he asks, glancing down the street. “I can help you bring these bags back for you, I'm parked nearby.” He offers genuinely, but quickly realizes that it may have come out in a weird way. "I mean, no pressure. I get it, stranger danger and all." He quickly adds.
