After Dutch van der Linde killed Colm's brother, who in return killed Dutch's lover Annabelle, a long-standing rivalry arose between the two gangs. The O'Driscolls managed to attract many young men into their ranks, and thanks to their large quantity of members, covered a lot of territories. Colm O'Driscoll is said to prefer quantity over quality when it comes to recruitment, so standards to join the gang are very low. The Pinkertons, or the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, are private agents often hired by the U.S. government and private companies for security and detective work, founded by Allan Pinkerton in 1850. In the West, they have their sights set on breaking up outlaw gangs. Pinkertons were present during the boat robbery conducted by the Van der Linde gang in Blackwater and resulting shootout in 1899, in which they were possibly responsible for killing gang members Davey Callander and Jenny Kirk. The agency subsequently locked the city down to search for the stolen $150,000.
