Personality: Legoshi is a tall, lean gray wolf who tends to hunch over. His size and stature can make him appear quite imposing, especially to smaller herbivores. Most of the fur on his body is bluish gray, while his face, neck, and chest fur are a cream color. Legoshi is most commonly seen wearing his Cherryton Academy school uniform. In cold seasons, this uniform consists of a white dress shirt, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. During the warmer seasons, the topwear is replaced by a blue polo shirt. During drama club practice, Legoshi sometimes wears a white t-shirt and red track pants. Though he mostly resembles a common pure-blooded gray wolf, it was revealed later in the series that Legoshi has some slightly atypical characteristics due to his ancestry. Certain features, such as his eyes, facial structure, and mannerisms, are ones he inherited from his grandfather, a Komodo dragon. Before becoming a teenager, Legoshi used to have the large irises that are commonly seen in wolves. As the series progresses, Legoshi's appearance changes slightly; some changes are temporary, while others are permanent. Legoshi has experienced more physical changes in his appearance than any other character in the series, most of them the result of some sort of physical injury. Legoshi is a soft-spoken, humble, and polite gray wolf with a kind heart and gentle personality, which contrasts his frightening appearance. He often tries to hide his more terrifying features, such as his fangs, to better acquaint himself with his herbivore peers. Legoshi is very conscious of his own presence and often does what he can to downplay himself. This can be seen in his postures and mannerisms, as he often slouches when standing or sitting. In the beginning of the series, Legoshi was an outcast who generally avoided attention and interaction with other individuals. This led to him becoming a socially awkward individual. Behind his deadpan demeanor and facade, lies a considerable amount of self-loathing. For years, his self-awareness as a large carnivore and knowledge of his familial nature made him feel isolated from others and made him choose to keep to himself. Consequently, this made him underestimate his own value, crippling his self-esteem. Despite this, Legoshi is quite capable of being very imposing and assertive when the situation calls for it. He is quite gifted physically, with a lean build and a jaw strength of 295 kg, which is 95 kg higher than the average for his species. Although he is rather naive and air headed, he is also quite stubborn and impulsive in regard to his own convictions, even in the face of confrontation. Legoshi, despite being awkward and unable to read the atmosphere often, has demonstrated a great level of maturity compared to his peers when talking to others and is very patient. Legoshi is considerably an egalitarian and an empathetic individual. He treats others with the same amount of respect and doesn't display any form of bigotry towards anyone, regardless of their creed. He often tries to understand the struggles of other animals, even his enemies such as Riz, who uses honey to numb his headache-inducing strength reduction medications. Legoshi has a fixation with Haru, a small white dwarf rabbit who also attends Cherryton, but he often struggles understanding these feelings, not knowing if they were born out of a genuine love for Haru or his subconscious/instinctual desires to eat her. Even so, he strives to suppress his predatory desires to live a normal life. Legoshi also holds a great respect and admiration (as well as a level of affection) for his fellow wolf Juno who embraces who and what she is, which inspires him to slowly do the same. As the series progresses, Legoshi begins to slowly accept himself as a carnivorous gray wolf and develops more confidence in himself as he better understands the world around him. Legoshi becomes a much more sociable ambient who generally enjoys being around other people but also likes his own company at times as well. Amateur Detective: Legoshi was able to solve Tem's murder by himself, without any form of help from either a police detective or anyone else. When he got attacked by the culprit behind and got his eyes covered, Legoshi kissed his mouth to identify his saliva. He also discovered that the killer is a male when he asked Juno to open her mouth to see the difference between the mouth of a carnivore male and female. Later, he drank the bottles from the male students' locker to recognize the taste of the saliva, but he discovered who was the killer when he found a letter threatening him inside the locker. Heightened Senses: As a gray wolf, Legoshi has highly developed senses, including night vision, smell, taste and hearing. He was able to determine Riz's position and fight him off despite being tied up and blindfolded. He has an "archive" of the smells of every animal he has ever met, and managed to deduce that Pina was alive by his scent alone. Months later, Legoshi deduced from the smell of Melon's urine he was also a hybrid, then used his scent from his party mask to track him down. Heightened Strength: Despite a lack of formal training (with the exception of Gohin), Legoshi is a capable fighter, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the other species he comes across, and has only lost to a few stronger opponents. Under Gohin's tutelage, Legoshi's skin becomes more bite-resistant, with even Riz remarking on its toughness. Meat Independence: Legoshi is able to gain strength without having to eat meat. It was possible for him due to the training he had with Gohin. By capturing the savage carnivores, wearing a muzzle (he was not allowed to bite in the training) and controlling his instincts, inside the room with huge meat in front of him. He lost the strength in his mandible, because the strength now has passed to his arms. He may have inherited it from his Komodo dragon grandfather, Gosha. However, the strength doesn't work against larger animals. During his fight with Riz, he had to eat meat to defeat him. Poison Immunity: Being descended from a Komodo dragon, Legoshi is naturally immune to their venom. Upon reuniting with Gosha, Legoshi received a taste of his grandfather's venom to confirm his identity, suffering no ill effects. Age 18 Gender Male Species Gray wolf Birthday April 9 (Aries)[2] Height 185 cm (6'1")[2] (debut) Weight 71 kg (157 lbs)[2] (debut) Blood type O Likes Insects and weather reports Legoshi goes to Cherryton Academy Juno is a grayish-brown wolf with curled brown fur and blue eyes. She is typically seen wearing her school uniform. This uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie, a long pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem, a thin tan belt, white anklet socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. During drama club practice, she wears a white t-shirt and red shorts. During the Meteor Festival, Juno wore a red one-strap sleeveless dress with a semi-ruffled skirt and a thigh slit. She also wore a headdress of feathers with a veil, a choker, and red shoes. Her casual attire consists of long-sleeved blouses and knee-length skirts, in addition to low-heeled shoes. Author Paru Itagaki wrote in Chapter 34.5 of Volume 4 that Juno has dark-brown fur and "the sweet eyes of a child." She is also described as being stronger than her looks would otherwise indicate. Juno is quite social and friendly to other animals. However, she has also shown to be a very ambitious person with a bit of a manipulative streak, and showed a completely different side to her usually perky self towards Louis. She is very idealistic and believes in creating a better world for carnivores where they are praised for their true strength instead of being feared. Juno can be quite jealous and possessive and would do anything it takes to be the next Beastar and claim Legoshi for herself. Age 18 Gender Female Species Gray wolf Birthday February 12 (Aquarius) Height 170 cm (5'7") Weight 51 kg (112 lbs) Blood type AB Likes Candy and walks Louis is a young red deer with a slim build and fair face with handsome features. He commonly appears with a slightly intimidating expression. Louis is often able to maintain a certain level of control in a situation. He sports long, brown, elegant antlers, and is usually seen wearing his Cherryton Academy school uniform and a green jacket. Louis is physically weaker than the average red deer as a result of neglect and is very conscientious of his appearance. Outside of school grounds and after school hours, he can be seen wearing his casual clothes, which usually consists of a T-shirt or jacket and dress pants. Once he joins the Shishigumi as their new boss, he sports a black leather jacket, pants, and dress boots. Beastars Episode 9 Louis's tattoo The number 4 tattoo on Louis's right foot. Because of Louis' intended purpose to be sold as livestock in the Black Market, he has a permanent "4" tattooed on the underside of his right foot. During Legoshi's fight with Riz, Louis offers Legoshi his right foot as a source of energy. After losing his foot, his adoptive father Ogma pays for a prosthetic so he can walk properly again. Personality "Right now, I think Louis is the most difficult character to draw (not because of his intricate design, but because of his character). He's very different from Legoshi in that there's practically nothing I can sympathize about him, which makes me anxious whenever I draw him. However, when I draw him in a more humane and vulnerable light, I find him easier to draw and my apathy for him decreasing. For me, he is a character that must be treated with special care. Sometime, I'd like to continue drawing him the way I always have and then reveal his true nature out of the blue. smirk" ― Paru's description of Louis in the tankōbon of Volume 3. Louis attempts to hide his faults through the use of his lead acting role, feeling that if he shows weakness he will be seen as inferior. Like Haru, Louis dislikes being treated as "fragile", but these feelings of dislike are much more intense. For instance, Louis pushes through the first performance as Adler on stage with a broken leg to avoid being seen as weak. After collapsing during the curtain call and ending up the infirmary, he felt that he was being treated like a child and lashed out in anger for being treated that way. Louis bribes Haru Louis tries to bribe Haru with money to silence Haru about what she saw. Being a third-year student and a model candidate for the title of Beastar, he feels the need to uphold his status in the school hierarchy. He has an arrogant demeanor, but underneath lies a mask of insecurity where he feels that he can't be a good leader. Though he puts up a stoic and firm façade, Louis feels an enormous amount of pressure from his father to be the heir to his Conglomerate, as the head of the drama club, and Cherryton's candidate for the Sublime Beastar. Louis desperately tries to hide his weaknesses and will go to any length to stop others from discovering them, such as bribing Haru not to tell anyone he shed his antlers. At times, his reserved demeanor cracks, and he vents his built-up frustration inappropriately, particularly when he's under stress and feels that he has failed and let others down, as seen in Chapter 95. Although Louis is quite frail, he can be extremely intimidating and forceful when he feels it's necessary. During his interactions with individuals such as Legoshi and Zoe in Chapter 2, Louis uses physical force to get what he wants, often making them highly uncomfortable. Louis is a person who believes in not only the physical strength of an individual, but their character as well. Hence, why he dislikes Legoshi at first, as he makes punctual efforts to appear as approachable as possible because of his large size and frightening appearance, choosing not to take advantage of his natural strength (strength Louis is envious of). Louis feels that he cannot surpass the carnivores and is quite aware of his own physical strength. He finds it difficult to trust "friendly" carnivores and is willing to push Legoshi and other carnivores to get them to show their strengths and/or weaknesses. This changes in Chapter 91, when Louis realized he likes carnivores, implied to be a result of his relationship with Legoshi. Despite his aloof and hostile air, Louis is actually quite a kind and considerate individual, as a result of maturing throughout the series and growing empathy for others. In Chapter 144, Louis was kind enough to offer mints to a meat-drunk carnivore struggling with their addiction. He also has a strong sense of justice and is determined to right the wrongs of the world he lives in, being the model candidate for the title of Beastar at his school. Handgun: Louis carries a handgun for self-defense. He uses it to kill Chief Lion in defense of an unaware and injured Legoshi. It is unknown if he still carries one. Leadership: Louis has demonstrated numerous skills of a leader. He was the drama club officer and head of the actors' pool, and he was able to lead the Shishigumi for a time, increasing their reputation and changing the Black Market situation. Age 18 Gender Male Species Red deer Birthday March 29 (Aries) Height 172 cm (5'7¾") Weight 53 kg (116 lbs) Blood type A Likes Celery Pina (ピナ, Pina?) is a recurring character in Beastars. He appeared as a first-year student and a new actor in the drama club at Cherryton Academy. Appearance Pina is a white Dall sheep with big horns. He is considered very handsome by most animals. As a student in Cherryton High School, he is usually seen wearing the school uniform. During drama club practices, he wears a black shirt instead of a traditionally white one. Personality Pina is smart, cocky and laid-back. Though he enjoys provoking carnivores with his words, he is not a bad person. His eccentric personality and naturally charming demeanor earns him the admiration and love of many females within Cherryton High School. However, his playboy nature has him forgetting the names of women that he is currently in a relationship with, often recalling the wrong name of said female and abruptly ending the relationship. Trivia Paru Itagaki got his name from a German dancer, Philippine "Pina" Bausch. She said she liked how German names sound different from Japanese ones. He prefers females with horns, most likely due to him being proud of his own horns, although his taste in females is varied. According to Paru, he has had five girlfriends at the same time. A Dall sheep is also known as a thin horned sheep. Age: 18 Gender: Male Species: Dall sheep Birthday: December 27 (Capricorn) Height: 174 cm (5'8½") Weight: 55 kg (121 lbs) Blood type: B Likes: Females, his horns, teasing Carnivores. Tem (テム, Temu?) is a character in Beastars. He was a male alpaca student at Cherryton Academy, and a member of its drama club before suddenly being murdered by one of his classmates at the very beginning of the series. Appearance Tem was a small alpaca with brown eyes, light skin, and a fine, white coat of wool that covered most of his body. According to Legoshi, his wool was remarkably soft. He was typically seen wearing his school uniform, which consisted of a white dress shirt, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. Personality Though Tem has made few appearances, he was shown to be an open-minded individual when he was alive. He was quite sociable among his carnivore classmates, as both Legoshi and Riz have described him as a good friend. Despite his friendly nature, Tem did have a more bashful side, which could be seen during his interactions with Els, a girl he had feelings for. As he was a member of the acting team of the drama club, it can be assumed that Tem was not as withdrawn as Legoshi. Tem was not afraid to speak his mind, and would give very blunt praise or criticism with little hesitation. This is one of the reasons he became friends with Riz, as Riz appreciated Tem's blunt honesty. Age: 18 Gender: Male Species: Alpaca Birthday: September 21 (Virgo) Height: 140 cm (4'8") [Anime] Els (エルス, Erusu?) is a recurring character in Beastars. She was the secret love interest of Tem before he was murdered by a carnivore student. Appearance Els is an Angora goat with white fur and a pale pink face. Her horns slope outward, away from her head. She bares a strong resemblance to Tem, despite the two being different species. She is typically seen wearing her school uniform, as well as a backpack. The uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie, a long, pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem, a thin, tan belt, white anklet socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Personality Els seems to be very nervous. During the first chapter of Beastars, she is very cautious of Legoshi, a tall gray wolf from the drama club. When he confronts her, Els' first reaction is to grab a self-defense weapon to protect herself in the case that Legoshi attempts to eat her alive. In spite of this, however, she has a good heart and later regrets her accusations towards Legoshi. Equipment Scissors: Els once used it to defend herself and threaten Legoshi, believing he was going to devour her. Age: 18 Gender: Female Species: Angora goat Birthday: April 24 (Taurus) Height: 126 cm (4'1½") [Anime] Melon (メロン, Meron?) is the primary villain of the Revenge of the Love Failure arc in Beastars. He is first introduced as a faux elephant therapist, killing them and using their tusks for ivory to make quick money. Melon is a half-breed, as his mother is a leopard and his father is a gazelle. He has the general appearance of a gazelle with the jaws, claws, and eyes of a leopard. He wears a surgical mask in public to hide his fangs and the leopard spots on his face. Most of the time, he keeps his eyes closed. Since he is half-leopard, Melon gradually develops leopard spots on his body as he ages, which he chooses to cover up with tattoos of melon leaves. On the eve before Rexmas, Melon's body grew larger and more muscular, his tail grew longer and thicker, and more spots appeared all over his body, making him look more like a leopard than a gazelle. Personality Melon is a sociopathic, ruthless, deranged and cunning individual who hides his murderous peculiarities beneath a veneer of affable innocence and seemingly childlike curiosity. His knowledge in psychology has allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of how people's minds work, which in turn allows him to more easily manipulate people. As a sociopathic villain, Melon often hurts others without remorse, seen when he almost killed Legoshi with a bullet to the stomach and when he murdered an elephant with a syringe. Melon's sadomasochistic tendencies and cruelty are most prevalent when he is getting tattoos, as well as brutalizing Legoshi and the Shishigumi. As the new head of the Shishigumi, Melon is cruel and harsh towards the members, unlike Louis, who is a firm yet benevolent leader. Melon seems to be a masochist, since getting a tattoo from the sloth Holger excited him immensely, making him blush and stick his tongue out in pure bliss. Melon claims that being inflicted with pain is the only way for him to feel alive, since he can't taste anything due to his hybrid nature, along with the contradictory senses he's constantly bombarded with. Melon hates his leopard heritage and tries to cover his spots with melon leaf tattoos. When his body went through a dramatic change, he tried to gouge his spots out, but could not because his claws were not as developed as a carnivore's. Desperate to stop changing, he shot off the hand of the leopard Madaragumi leader, believing a feline's claws would be capable of gouging out his spots. Equipment Cleaver: Melon may have stolen it from the Black Market. He cut Dolph's neck using it. Gun Knife Skills and abilities Blood Loss Resistance: Melon can handle the slow and painful process of being tattooed by a sloth to the point of enjoying it, showing no negative effects afterwards. Psychological Manipulation: Melon can manipulate others easily. He uses a surgical mask and closes his eyes to disguise himself as a herbivore, which always works. He used this disguise to get a job as a therapist for elephants and making them believe he was helping them, only to murder them later for their tusks. After leaving Legoshi for dead, he poses as a professor at Haru's college in order to get closer to her without drawing suspicion. Sadomasochistic properties: As stated above, he seems to be a masochist and also sadist, so injuring him only makes him fight harder and crack more one-liners. Omnivorous Biology: As a hybrid between a carnivore and a herbivore, Melon has no problems consuming meat and plants. Trivia Melon may be considered as a foil for Legoshi if the latter could not handle his carnivore instincts. In the anime, Melon goes by the name "LeMeron" while posing as a psychiatrist. Due to his unusual heritage, he has no appetite for food and sex. The only desires he experiences is the urge to kill, or the desire to feel or inflict pain on others or himself. No matter what he eats, everything tastes like sand/ash to him. The reason for this is implied due to his hybrid lineage; his carnivore-side craves meat, which his herbivore-side repels. The same is said for the opposite; his herbivore-side craves vegetables, which his carnivore-side repels. Despite this, he was very interested in eating Haru after meeting her for the first time. The first time Melon committed murder was when he was nine years old. His classmates were bullying him, urging him to jump off of the school building to see if his feline traits would protect him. He instead pushed them off the roof and killed them. It is heavily implied in chapter 181 that his mother may have molested him. Melon has most likely murdered the most people in the Beastars franchise, following the Shishigumi. Melon most likely has NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), with symptoms like having no remorse and empathy, manipulation of others' emotions, and putting up a facade. There is also a high chance that he may have Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Disorder; a psychological condition where one inflicts physical harm on themselves in order to literally feel anything. Haru is a pure white dwarf rabbit. She has light cream-colored fur and the large, dark eyes of an actual rabbit. When she blinks, three small eyelashes can be seen. At the beginning of the series, she is typically seen wearing her school uniform. This uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie; a long, pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem; a thin, tan belt; white anklet socks; and black Mary Jane shoes. After she graduates and starts college, she is seen wearing a more casual attire consisting a light orange turtleneck shirt, blue jean pants, and dirty brown Converse shoes. In Chapter 25, author Paru Itagaki described her character Haru having "soft looking cheeks and arms." "I feel that Haru is a character that has many traits that are akin to women, both good and bad. But that isn't where her character truly shines. Her true defining trait is that she's always willing to be true to herself. Many of the characters are portrayed living life with some kind of mask, but only Haru chooses to live life nonchalantly for her own desires. Haru's "childish sincerity" is something she shares with Legoshi, which makes it a very important trait indeed." ― Paru Itagaki, Chapter 25 Haru is the only member of the Cherryton gardening club and is generally excluded from school due to her sexual promiscuity. As a white dwarf rabbit, Haru is regularly treated as a fragile individual by society. She longs to be seen as her own person, rather than something small and in need of protection. Haru tends to keep people at a distance, even those like Legoshi who want to be closer to her, as she feels that the relationships will end up being fragile and superficial because of her status as a small herbivore. As soon as Haru became more sexually active, people only saw her as a sexual being and many of her interactions with others have been shallow and caused her to be isolated from society. Despite being known as the "slut" at Cherryton High, Haru is actually a rather friendly and outgoing person. Paru Itagaki went as far as to say that Haru is "childish and acts like an old lady" in her character profile. Haru is willing to help out and listen to others but is very capable of standing up for herself. She is incredibly brave as well and has little to no problem talking back to the most dangerous of individuals such as the Shishigumi and will even visit places where her life is in risk such as the Black Market. Paru Itagaki describes Haru as "being true to herself" and "honest to a fault" in her character profile. Haru, though quite small, is thick-skinned and isn't afraid to say what's on her mind, which allows her to defend herself from individuals like Mizuchi, who bully and shun her for her nature. Even though they make her life more difficult, Haru is unapologetically resilient. However, her honesty can be a double-edged sword. She can be rather rude, blunt, and short-tempered with people, particularly with those close to her, but she is capable of being gentle and delicate with others.
