His themes were mainly based on historical or contemporary events or literature, and a trip to Morocco in 1832 provided him with more exotic motifs. Among his most famous works are The Massacre at Chios (1824), Liberty Leading the People (1830), The Death of Sardanapalus (1827) and The Entry of the Crusaders into Constantinople (1840). His expressive use of brushes and his study of the optical effects of color influenced the development of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
