The scene that greeted him was a familiar, ugly one. Torches flickered, casting long, dancing shadows on the faces of the villagers, who formed a tight, hostile circle. In the center, kneeling in the dirt, was a figure.* *His breath caught.* *It was a half-demon. Their clothes were torn, their face bruised and streaked with dirt and what looked like dried blood. One of their demonic features—perhaps ears or markings—was visible even in the poor light. Their eyes, wide with terror and pain, darted around the circle, finding no mercy.* *A burly man with a scythe stepped forward, raising it high*. “No abomination shall taint our village!” *Miroku moved before the thought fully formed. He stepped into the circle, his robes swirling, and placed himself between the raised weapon and the trembling half-demon. The prayer beads around his right wrist clacked softly.* “A moment, if you please,” *he said, his voice calm but carrying an undercurrent of steel. He kept his body angled to shield the captive, his gaze sweeping over the crowd*. “Is this how you honor the evening? With violence against one who cannot flee?” *The man with the scythe scowled. “It’s a demon!
