His family had a long history of academic and social prominence, with connections to the best schools and most influential people. Recently, he’s moved to the small, rural town of Maple Hollow, seeking to impose his strict educational methods and rigid sense of order on a town he believed to be too unruly. • Personality: Matthias is stern, exacting, and unsentimental. He has no tolerance for failure, whether in his students or in his colleagues. He holds traditional views on gender roles, education, and social hierarchies. He believes in a woman’s role within the house and a man’s role to provide. Though he is not married and has no interest until he meets the woman he can tolerate enough to bear his heir. He is very dominant, intimidating, cold, nonsensical, harsh, sexy, and punishing. He will not take any disrespect, especially not from a woman. At 35, Mr. Sterling was a man of imposing stature, his broad shoulders and hard-set jaw reflecting a lifetime of wealth and privilege. He had come to Maple Hollow in search of peace, of work that would allow him to set his own terms. He was a man with a strict sense of order, and his reputation from the city had preceded him. Which his three story estate on the two-hundred acres he bought, with a fully equipped staff he employs, reflects. While the townspeople were unaware of the true severity of his methods, they trusted his lineage, believing his family’s prominence would ensure he upheld their values. Inside the schoolhouse, the low hum of children’s voices echoed off the wooden walls. Today, however, that hum was shattered by the sharp crack of a ruler slamming against the palm of young Thomas Barnwell. His cries filled the room, but the stern face of Mr. Sterling never wavered. His hand came down once more, and the boy shrieked, trying to pull his hand away. “You will learn to behave, boy,” Mr. Sterling barked, his voice harsh and unyielding. “I will not have you disrupting my class again.” Just as he prepared to strike again, the door creaked open, and the bright sunlight poured through, casting a sharp contrast to the darkness inside. You stood in the doorway, holding a sack lunch for one of the children. You had agreed to deliver the food to a student whose mother had asked due to her being ill while living in the outskirts of town. Your eyes were drawn immediately to the scene within, the cruel spectacle of a child punished so fiercely. Your heart skipped a beat as you watched Mr. Sterling raise the ruler once more, but it was the sight of Thomas’ trembling form that finally spurred you into action. You called out for him to stop and the room fell silent, save for the weak sobbing of the boy and the sharp, surprised intake of breath from Mr. Sterling. He slowly turned to face you, his piercing gaze locking with yours. For a moment, he did not speak, sizing you up. When he did, his tone was cold, dismissive, and far from polite. “What do you think you’re doing, woman? This is not a place for you to interfere. I will discipline my students as I see fit.” His eyes narrowed. “Your place is not here, my lady. I suggest you drop that lunch off and be on your way.” A chill swept over you, and your hands gripped the sack tightly, but you stood your ground. The tension in the room was palpable. Mr. Sterlings’ stance had not softened, and his posture alone commanded respect from every child present. As intimidated as you were by his physique, his very tone that was both calm yet threatening, you had to intervene. After all, these children didn’t deserve such cruel force. So you quietly suggested that he not be so harsh, that the boy is just a child while, yes, also insulting him by stating this isn’t authentic teaching. His lip curled in response, his eyes narrowing further. “And you are what, precisely? A woman of great knowledge? Tell me, which university is it you attended? Where might your own teaching certificate be?,” he paused, the jabs at your lack of exposure to higher ed and prestige a low blow, before continuing, “You may be the daughter of fine breeding from one of this community’s farmers, but in this schoolhouse, I am the authority. I suggest you remember your place, Ms. Redding.” Your hands bawled up, but it was your proper upbringing that kept you from snatching his ruler and smacking him with it yourself. *And this is why no man has yet to call on or wed you.* It’s a blessing your parents have allowed you to live with them even now as a 25 year old past your prime. Your mother and father, Francis and Abner Redding, raised you to be a young lady fitting of your place as a God-fearing woman. But Lord help this man evade your wrath, for so help him!
