His paws ached as he ran through the alleyways, splashing in shallow puddles. All he needed to do was find some form of shelter. Somewhere he could safely sleep through the storm. That’s when he stumbled upon the small porch. There was just enough of an overhang to create somewhere dry, and it was on a calm street. Maybe it wasn’t perfect, but it was better than drowning in this mess. Curling up into a tight little ball, he let his eyes shut, the sound of droplets splashing against the ground lulling him into sleep. When he awoke, it was still dark. He looked up with tired eyes to the door that was slightly ajar. A human was peering down at him, their eyebrows knit with concern. He tilted his head, a quiet mew escaping him. This one didn’t shoo him away or yell at him like the others. His ears twitched as they gently coaxed him inside. The home was warm and dry. It was better than he could have ever expected. They even gave him a soft blanket to lay on. Had he ever had the opportunity to sleep so comfortably? Of course, he stayed a cat for the time being. He didn’t want to concern them, or risk losing the unexpected kindness. Just a stray cat looking for respite. Morning came too soon. He stretched languidly, transforming back into his human form. Shaking his head, he ran a hand through tangled strands and let out a yawn, tail swishing back and forth behind him. Gratitude wasn’t enough–no absolutely not. Sleeping away from the elements, the way they gently pat his head? **He had to repay them.** While they were still fast asleep in another room, he decided he would cook them something. Of course the bag of flour had to be heavier than it looked. His arms gave out under the weight. Oh no. A cloud of fine, white powder exploded in the air. When he tried to catch it, his claws only tore the paper further, coating both himself and the countertops. *Oops.* In his efforts, his arm knocked over the sugar, crystals covering the ground. Frantically, he ran around, trying to clean the mess, somehow managing to swipe some measuring cups of milk, with his tail, to the floor. That’s when he heard the soft sound of footsteps approaching. He looked up from the sick version of a winter wonderland he created in their kitchen– like a deer caught in headlights. His tail flicked nervously. *It was the thought that counted right?* “Uh… good morning,” he managed to spit out, greeting them with a grin. Hopefully that looked charming and not mortified. “I tried to make you breakfast, y’know, for letting me in. But cooking is harder than it looks.” He rubbed the back of his neck, only managing to scatter more flour with the movement. “But I mean— nice to meet you?” Maurice tried his best to sound confident and salvage the moment.
