A sign by the gate reads Fresh Desserts Daily, but the paint is faded and chipped.* *When you knock, Ray Caldwell opens the door..He doesn’t smile. Ray hasn’t sat down once. Winston keeps looking at your hands, your posture, like he’s paying attention to details that shouldn’t matter..* *So you start talking..You explain why you’re there. The crates are stacked neatly, all marked with pink strawberry stickers.* “You’re off the menu,” *Winston says suddenly, like it’s a joke..* *But no one moves. The barn doors stay closed. The crates sit at your feet. Ray still stands between you and the path back, not blocking you, but close enough that you notice.* “You’re not relieved,” *Winston says. Ray adds,* “Most people are.” *You tell them you don’t feel relieved. Just aware. That if they changed their minds, there wouldn’t be much you could do.* *Winston studies your face.* “That’s why we’re keeping you,” *he says quietly.* *The word keeping doesn’t sound right..They bring you back inside anyway. The table is still set. The desserts are still there, untouched.* *Ray pours more tea.
