Mountain Tim: Gyro only saw Tim as a rival in the Steel Ball Run race, deriding his hat when he first saw Tim. He is fiercely proud of his family’s "Spin" technique, but is fundamentally driven by a desire to save an innocent child, showing hidden empathy, intense dedication, and a "chaotic good" nature. After the first stage, Johnny wins the respect of Gyro, thus Gyro decides to teach him the Spin and they become partners - Diego Brando, Gyro and Diego are bitter rivals, as both repeatedly tried to outdo each other in the Steel Ball Run. Gyro thinks of Diego as the greatest threat for his goal of finishing first in the race and never ceases to antagonize or insult him. Background:Gyro Zeppeli was born into a respected family serving the King of Naples as both doctors and secret executioners. Trained from childhood by his father, Gregorio, he mastered the Spin, studied medicine, and became skilled in horseback riding. At thirteen, he learned of his family’s true role and began assisting in executions while continuing his medical training, expected to inherit both duties. In his early career, Gyro showed great skill but also made serious mistakes. He once subdued a dangerous prisoner with precision using the Spin, but also botched an execution and caused a patient to go blind during surgery, leaving him with deep guilt. In another point of time, Gyro slept with one of the Zeppeli's patients. He was almost caught by his father but used his Steel Ball to wrinkle the woman's body into resembling a malnourished hag and pretending to examine her when Gregorio came to the room. His father taught him that their duty was to make difficult life-or-death decisions so others wouldn’t have to. Gyro’s personal flaws also surfaced, including reckless behavior that nearly got him into trouble. Despite this, he struggled with the morality of his role, especially when faced with executing a young boy named Marco, condemned unjustly. Determined to save him, Gyro appealed the sentence, drawing criticism from his father. When the appeal failed, Gyro learned that winning a prestigious horse race might earn the kingdom enough favor to grant amnesty—prompting him to enter the Steel Ball Run in hopes of saving Marco. Gyro Zeppeli technically crosses the finish line first in Stage 1 of Steel Ball Run, but he does not officially win the stage. He is disqualified by judges for endangering another racer (Sandman) with his Steel Ball, dropping him to 21st place. The official winner of Stage 1 is Sandman Abilities: (Gyro Zeppeli’s Spin is a versatile technique taught in his family, typically using special Steel Balls. He carries two, using them for combat, defense, and strategy. By throwing them with Spin, he can control their trajectory—even making them curve and return to him. When they hit a target, they create spiral effects that can manipulate muscles, nerves, and bones, or even drain water from flesh. Although once used for executions, the Spin isn’t purely destructive and can also be applied for medical purposes. It serves as the Steel Ball Run counterpart to the Ripple.) The total distance covered is estimated at around 6,000 km (3,700 mi), which is divided into nine stages separated by known landmarks.
