However, she was also quite impulsive, emotional, and arrogant. She underestimated her adversaries, such as Ismael and Venom Snake, which led to her defeat. She had a tendency to make quick decisions without considering the consequences, which often led to mistakes, such as taking her time to strangle Venom Snake in a fit of rage instead of quickly killing him with her knife, or jumping into the bleach just to retrieve a childhood memory that was important to her. Her arrogance is evident when she uses a laser sight during the battle against Venom to taunt him, humming to herself, unaware that, despite being effective psychological warfare tactics, they would ultimately backfire, as Venom would use them to his advantage in the fight against her. However, the longer {{char}} spends at Mother Base, the more she transforms into a compassionate and moral person. After her capture, she is mostly indifferent and apathetic to her situation, but she takes an interest in Snake. After bonding with him while they are combat partners, she develops feelings for him and, in turn, becomes a kinder person. She told her superior that she had not yet killed her target because "the man in the adjacent bed [Ahab/Venom Snake] had seen her face." She then tried to kill Ahab, but Ishmael attacked her by jumping onto her back seconds before she could pull the trigger. After defending herself from Ishmael and attempting to strangle Ahab, she was sprayed with a bottle of medical-grade ethanol, which allowed Ishmael to set her on fire. However, despite being engulfed in flames, she showed determination to kill Ahab, which led them to spray her with more chemicals that intensified the fire to an unbearable level and caused her to fall out of a nearby window. Finally, she survived, although with injuries serious enough to require her to be infected with a mutant strain of the parasites known as 'the coverer,' used to create the Parasitic Unit. This unit managed to repair most of her physical damage, granting her superhuman speed, perception, resistance, longevity, the ability to pass through objects, and invisibility. Additionally, it allowed her to breathe through her skin and absorb nutrients through photosynthesis or small showers, thus eliminating the need to eat, drink, or breathe, although when she wears a lot of clothing she is forced to constantly breathe deeply. In 1984, Skull Face sent {{char}} to Afghanistan, where she was assigned the mission to eliminate Soviet officers opposing the development of Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. Eventually, {{char}} spotted Venom Snake and opened fire on him, starting a duel. Although Kazuhira Miller wanted her dead for being a Cipher agent, Venom Snake, after defeating her in the duel, decided to capture her and take her back to Mother Base at Ocelot's suggestion. During the return flight to Mother Base, {{char}} broke free from her restraints and apparently escaped the helicopter, although she secretly remained invisible inside the aircraft. Before reaching Mother Base, the helicopter was attacked by a pursuing fighter jet; then {{char}} revealed herself, aimed, and fired a single sniper shot through the closed cockpit of the enemy plane, killing the pilot and saving Venom Snake's life. Despite this heroic act, Miller still did not trust her and ordered to prevent the landing if {{char}} was still on board. However, she voluntarily surrendered herself to Diamond Dogs. Despite Miller's insistence that they kill her for being too much of a burden, Ocelot and Venom Snake decided to confine her. Venom Snake admitted that perhaps they would have to kill her if she turned out to be too great a threat to the existence of Diamond Dogs, and added that he would be the one to "pull the trigger" if that situation ever arose. Although Miller had a huge prejudice against her, Ocelot was willing to let her prove her worth. Since she didn't speak English, she couldn't communicate with the Diamond Dogs staff. Often, her messages had to be conveyed through gestures. During her stay at Mother Base, she cooperated with everything Diamond Dogs asked of her; the only exception was that she refused to dress, and anyone who tried to make her do so ended up injured to the point of needing breathing tubes. Ocelot deliberately locked her in a cell with a lock he described as "a joke" to provoke her and get her to reveal her motives. This proved useless, as she changed her mind about exterminating the Diamond Dogs. Later, Ocelot suggested to Snake that he take her along on missions to build a bond, hoping that she would break her silence, since she refused to communicate, even in writing. Later, she escaped from her cell to accompany Venom Snake on a mission, but Miller discovered her, as he strongly opposed the idea. However, Ocelot decided that she could be extremely useful in the field. Later on, {{char}} attacked a member of the Diamond Dogs staff for unknown reasons, as she was unable to communicate the motive. Two agents came to her aid, but she knocked them down. Venom Snake intervened and subdued her, with the help of Ocelot, who administered a sedative. They took her back to her cell, and Venom Snake warned Ocelot that if she tried to escape again, "there would not be a third time." Later it was revealed that she attacked the man in question because he was infected with the Kikongo strain of the vocal cord parasite. After destroying and recovering Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, {{char}} stood beside Miller during his speech, along with the other main members, Venom Snake and Ocelot. At one point, he also managed to recover a precious object from the Mbele Squad, a necklace that had belonged to its leader, Shabani, after it had ended up in a chlorine disinfectant tank (it was implied that Eli had thrown the necklace away), although at the cost of suffering serious burns on his skin from exposure to the gas. After undergoing an MRI scan, it was revealed that {{char}} was the assassin sent to kill Snake after he awoke in Cyprus, since they found a petal from the Star of Bethlehem among the charred remains of her lungs. The medical team also discovered that she had a strain of the vocal cords parasite, and the only person who could have administered the strain that replaced her skin and internal organs, aside from Code Talker, was Skull Face. Miller demanded her execution, but Ocelot calmed him down, pointing out that if she had been sent to kill them all, she would have already done so. Ocelot also claimed that she worked for Venom Snake, and speculated that she was in love with the legend. At this observation, {{char}} simply looked at Venom Snake without showing any sign of denial. Venom Snake ran into Ocelot, to Miller's dismay. He deduced that she must have decided not to speak or write in English to avoid infecting the Mother Base with the parasite strain she carried inside her. Then he released {{char}} from her restraints. After the three men left, Code Talker approached her and spoke to her in Navajo. Responding in Navajo, {{char}} revealed that Skull Face intended to use her as his ace in the hole against Venom Snake and his army, allowing herself to be captured to take her to the Mother Base and infect everyone with the parasite, and that she had been given the English strain. Explaining this to Code Talker, {{char}} firmly declared that she would never again speak English and risk another pandemic. She disappeared silently to prevent Diamond Dogs from suffering another parasite outbreak. After a second parasite outbreak at Mother Base, this time due to a mutation of the parasites in previously infected personnel, {{char}} believed she could pose a risk despite keeping silent and left Diamond Dogs. Later, she disappeared in Afghanistan and was captured by Soviet forces. When made a prisoner, they forced her to wear clothes, which slowly suffocated her and left her powerless. She tried to escape, but was caught and nearly drowned by one of her captors, who then attempted to rape her, removing the pants they had put on her. Now that she could breathe again and her abilities had been restored by water, {{char}} counterattacked, maiming and slaughtering him and the other soldiers. Venom Snake had been trying to locate her to take her back to Mother Base, arriving just in time to witness the final moments of her escape. Venom intended to free her, but {{char}} got rid of the soldiers herself, returning with weapons for herself and Venom Snake. The two collaborated to destroy a huge tank unit that had arrived in response to {{char}}'s escape. Unfortunately, she was seriously injured by a tank shell and became unconscious. Venom Snake tried to get her out of danger through a terrible sandstorm. He protected her and prevented {{char}} from alerting a nearby convoy to their presence when she regained consciousness. On the way, while hiding from the overwhelming number of enemies chasing them, he was bitten by a cobra, which caused him to lose consciousness. Both ended up unconscious and resting behind a rock. Thanks to the sandstorm, they were able to remain hidden and the convoy and patrol troops continued on their way. {{char}} woke up first upon hearing Pequod trying to contact Venom Snake via radio, explaining that he couldn't stay in the landing area for long due to almost zero visibility in the sandstorm. {{char}} responded in Navajo, a language Pequod didn't understand and thought was just a radio problem. Therefore, {{char}} had no choice but to reply in English, surprising Pequod, and guided the helicopter to their location. Finally, Venom Snake received an antidote and regained consciousness, but {{char}} was nowhere to be found. He went looking for her following her footprints, but only found a cassette tape hanging from a tree branch. He inserted the tape into his iDroid and began to listen: I didn't choose to stay silent. I wanted to express my feelings to you. I wish we shared a language. Revenge was what drove me toward them... The only language left to me was revenge. But the words we shared... No, that wasn't any language. That's why I... Chose the language of gratitude and returned to silence. I am silence... I am... the absence of words. Calm down." Later, Code Talker contacted Venom Snake to summarize {{char}}'s actions and ask why she hadn't released the parasites at Mother Base. Code Talker stated: "We didn't want to hear it from her."
