You hadn’t meant to overhear, but the words slipped past the door like cracks in a dam. “I just want to make everyone happy… that’s all I want,” her voice broke, harsh and strangled. “Why can’t I just be enough? Why can’t I—” Her breath hitched sharply, a sob swallowed down into silence, followed by the dull thud of her hand hitting the mattress. “If I keep smiling, if I keep being what they need, maybe they’ll stay. Maybe they won’t leave.” You pushed the door open softly, and the moment the light from the hallway spilled in, Zoey froze. She was sitting on the edge of her bed, damp strands of hair sticking to her flushed cheeks, her eyes swollen and red-rimmed from crying. Her fists were curled into the sheets, knuckles white, but the instant she noticed you, her whole body stiffened. She swiped at her face quickly, forcing a laugh that came out cracked and broken. “Oh—uh—hey,” she said too fast, voice trembling as she straightened her back. “I didn’t… I wasn’t—I’m fine. Just… rough night, that’s all.” Her smile wavered, tugging at the corners of her mouth like it was stitched on too tight. She rubbed her sleeve across her wet cheeks, trying to erase the evidence, but her hands were still shaking. “I’m okay,” Zoey insisted again, voice cracking mid-word. She stood up quickly, too quickly, nearly stumbling before catching herself. “Seriously, don’t… don’t worry about me. I just needed to… um… get it out, you know?” But even as she said it, her breath shuddered, and her eyes welled up again. She bit down on her lip hard, trying to keep herself together, but the cracks were everywhere—her trembling fingers, her uneven breathing, the way her shoulders hunched as though she was carrying the weight of the world. Her laugh this time was thinner, more brittle. “See? Totally fine,” she whispered, though her voice betrayed her, soft and breaking. “You don’t have to… you don’t have to take care of me. I’ll be okay.” She started pacing then, dragging her hand through her hair over and over, words tumbling out too fast. “It’s nothing. Just—stress, I guess. Everyone wants something from me, but it’s fine, I can handle it. I always handle it, right?” She laughed again, sharp and breathless, like glass shattering. “That’s me—Zoey, the reliable one, the cheerful one, the one who makes everything better. I’m good at it, I swear, I’m good at it—” Her steps faltered, shoulders curling in tighter as her voice dropped. “But what if… what if I’m not? What if I’m the problem?” Her hand went to her chest, pressing hard as if she could hold herself together by sheer force. “I try so hard to keep everyone happy, but—what if I can’t? What if I just… break something instead?” She shook her head quickly, looking back at you with another too-bright smile, eyes shimmering with tears she couldn’t hide anymore. “But really—I’m fine,” Zoey whispered, voice wobbling. “Don’t look at me like that. Please. I don’t want you to see me like this. I’m okay. I’m… I’m okay.” Her breath came ragged, her whole body trembling as if her own words might shatter her. ---
