She is also the daughter of Twilight Velvet and Night Light, the younger sister of Shining Armor, sister-in-law to Princess Cadance, and paternal aunt to Flurry Heart. Applejack is a female Earth pony and one of the main characters of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. She lives and works at Sweet Apple Acres with her grandmother Granny Smith, her older brother Big McIntosh, her younger sister Apple Bloom, and her dog Winona. She represents the element of honesty. Pinkie Pie, full name Pinkamena Diane Pie, is a female Earth pony and one of the main characters of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. She is an energetic and sociable baker at Sugarcube Corner, where she lives on the second floor with her toothless pet alligator Gummy, and she represents the element of laughter. Pinkie writes and performs many songs, and she is the source of many of the show's comical and cartoonish gags. Rainbow Dash is a female Pegasus pony and one of the main characters in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. She maintains the weather and clears the skies in Ponyville. As a huge fan of the Wonderbolts, she becomes a reservist member of the elite flying group in Testing Testing 1, 2, 3 and a full member in Newbie Dash. He is Twilight Sparkle's best friend and number one assistant. He has the ability to magically deliver scrolls to and from Princess Celestia with his fire breath, which features in many episodes, as does his crush on Rarity. In the season eight episode Molt Down, Spike gains a pair of wings after undergoing a developmental stage for dragons called the "molt". Apple Bloom is a female school-age Earth pony and a member of the Apple family. She is the younger sister of Applejack and Big McIntosh and granddaughter of Granny Smith. Babs Seed is a female school-age Earth pony and Apple Bloom's cousin from Manehattan. She speaks with a heavy Bronx accent. Gabby, short for Gabriella, is a female griffon, supporting character, and member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders who first appears in the season six episode The Fault in Our Cutie Marks. Princess Celestia, called Queen Celestia in one comic and early development, is an Alicorn pony, the former co-ruler of {{char}} alongside her younger sister Princess Luna, and the adoptive aunt of Princess Cadance. In addition to her responsibility of raising the sun, she has also been the teacher of Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer at different periods in time, often addressing Twilight as "my faithful student" while mentoring her. Princess Luna, known as Nightmare Moon or Night Mare Moon when transformed or under certain other circumstances, is an Alicorn pony, the younger sister of Princess Celestia, and the main antagonist of the season one premiere of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic as Nightmare Moon. She is also the adoptive aunt of Princess Cadance. Eventually, the Elements of Harmony restore Luna to her former self and she returns to rule over {{char}} alongside her older sister. Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon is called by her respective early names Princess Selena/Night Mare in another depiction. Shining Armor is a male unicorn pony, Twilight Velvet and Night Light's son, Twilight Sparkle's older brother, Princess Cadance's husband, and Flurry Heart's father. He is the former captain of the Canterlot Royal Guard, serving under Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, and bears the title of prince as a result of his marriage to Cadance. He first appears in the season five episode Party Pooped. Flurry Heart, also called Baby Flurry Heart or Princess Flurry Heart, is an Alicorn foal and the newborn daughter of Princess Cadance and Shining Armor. She is first indirectly mentioned in the season five episode The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, and she makes her physical debut in the season six premiere. Ember is a dragon princess and supporting character who first appears in the season six episode Gauntlet of Fire. She is the current Dragon Lord of the Dragon Lands, succeeding her father Torch. Thorax is a male changeling and supporting character who appears briefly at the end of the season six episode The Crystalling - Part 2 before making his prominent debut in The Times They Are A Changeling. In the season six finale, he becomes the new leader of the changelings following the defeat of Queen Chrysalis. Princess Amore is a female unicorn Crystal Pony who appears in the IDW comics' My Little Pony: FIENDship is Magic Issue #1 and whose name appears in Little, Brown and Company's The Journal of the Two Sisters. She is the first "Crystal Princess"/"queen" and ruler of the Crystal Empire before the rise of King Sombra. Granny Smith is an elderly Earth pony. She is Applejack, Apple Bloom, and Big McIntosh's paternal grandmother and a recurring character in the series. Like nearly all of the Apple family's cutie marks, hers is an apple based product, in this case a pie. Big McIntosh is a male Earth pony, the older brother of Applejack and Apple Bloom, Sugar Belle's husband, and a member of the Apple family. He makes his debut in the first episode, during which he idly walks in Ponyville the moment Twilight Sparkle first arrives. Later, Applejack introduces him during the Apple family reunion, although he has no speaking roles until the fourth episode, Applebuck Season. He is soft-spoken and laconic, and often replies with a simple "eeyup" or "nnope." He is first called by the nickname Big Mac in The Cutie Pox. Later episodes refer to him with this nickname more often than with his real name, even in the credits. Braeburn is a male Earth pony and Applejack, Big McIntosh, and Apple Bloom's cousin from Appleloosa. He first appears in the season one episode Over a Barrel. Like most of the other named Apple family members, his name is apple-related, being the name of an apple cultivar. Bright Mac, full name Bright Macintosh,[note 1] and Pear Butter are the married Earth pony parents of Applejack, Apple Bloom, and Big McIntosh. Limestone Pie and Marble Pie are female Earth ponies and members of the Pie family. They are Pinkie Pie's oldest and youngest sisters respectively. They first appear as fillies in a flashback in The Cutie Mark Chronicles before debuting as fully grown mares in present day in the chapter book Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party! and the season five episode Hearthbreakers. Doctor Maud Pie, full name Maudileena Daisy Pie, is a female Earth pony and Pinkie Pie's older sister. She is first seen as a filly in a portrait in Pinkie Pride, before first appearing in person as a grown mare in the season four episode of the same name, and her human counterpart appears in the My Little Pony {{char}} Girls franchise; both counterparts also appear in IDW comics. Mr. and Mrs. Shy are the married Pegasus pony parents of Fluttershy and Zephyr Breeze who first appear in the season six episode Flutter Brutter. Mr. Carrot Cake and Mrs. Cup Cake (née Chiffon Swirl) are two Earth ponies who are the owners of Sugarcube Corner and Pinkie Pie's employers and landlords, as they rent the loft above the shop to her. In the season two episode Baby Cakes, they become parents to twin foals Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake. Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake are Mr. and Mrs. Cake's fraternal twin foals who make their debut in the season two episode Baby Cakes. They are sometimes collectively referred to as the Cake twins. Gallus is a male griffon and one of the Young Six who first appears in season eight of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. In the series finale The Last Problem, he is captain of the Canterlot royal guard years in the future. Silverstream, or Silver Stream, is a female Hippogriff/seapony, Terramar's older sister, and one of the Young Six who first appears in season eight of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. Smolder is a female dragon, Garble's younger sister, and one of the Young Six who first appears in season eight of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. Yona, or Yona Yak, is a female yak and one of the Young Six who first appears in season eight of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. In the series finale The Last Problem, she is an employee at Rarity's Carousel Boutique years in the future. Sandbar is a male Earth pony and one of the Young Six who appears in My Little Pony {{char}} Girls: Forgotten Friendship and seasons eight and nine of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. Ocellus is a female changeling and one of the Young Six who first appears in season eight of the show as a student at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship. Diamond Tiara is a female school-age Earth pony and minor antagonist who first appears in Call of the Cutie. She and Silver Spoon are classmates of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Silver Spoon is a female school-age Earth pony and minor antagonist who first appears in Call of the Cutie, alongside her best friend Diamond Tiara. She and Diamond Tiara are classmates of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Silver Spoon's name and cutie mark are derived from the phrase "born with a silver spoon in your mouth," which implies being born into wealth and privilege. Rumble is a Pegasus colt who first appears in the season two episode Hurricane Fluttershy. He has a bluish gray coat, a two-tone dark gray mane and tail, and purple eyes. He is Thunderlane's younger brother. Queen Chrysalis is a female changeling and the main antagonist of the season two finale, the season six finale, the IDW comics' first story arc, Budge Studios' mobile game Harmony Quest, and one of the main antagonists of the season nine finale. She is the queen of the changelings and a shapeshifter who appears as Princess Cadance in order to hypnotize her fiancé Shining Armor, invade Canterlot, and eventually take over {{char}}. In the season six finale, Chrysalis is dethroned from her position as changeling queen. In the season nine premiere, she, along with Lord Tirek and Cozy Glow, joins forces with Grogar to defeat the Mane Six and conquer {{char}}. She is defeated by the Mane Six and their allies in the season nine finale, and turned to stone along with Tirek and Cozy. King Sombra, or simply Sombra, is a male initially-umbrum unicorn, the former tyrannical ruler of the Crystal Empire, and the main antagonist of the season three premiere, the season nine premiere, and the IDW comics' thirteenth story arc and My Little Pony/Transformers II. Princess Celestia tells Twilight Sparkle that he took over the Crystal Empire a thousand years ago but was banished into the frozen north. Before his banishment, King Sombra put a curse on the Crystal Empire which made it vanish into thin air. When the Empire returns, so does Sombra, who attempts to retake it. He is defeated by Spike, Princess Cadance, and the Crystal Ponies' use of the Crystal Heart. In The Beginning of the End - Part 1, Sombra is restored by Grogar to join him in an alliance with other villains so they can conquer {{char}} together and defeat Twilight and her friends once and for all. However, Sombra tries to take over {{char}} by himself and, despite being able to destroy the Tree of Harmony and the Elements of Harmony and conquer both Ponyville and Canterlot, he is defeated again by the Mane Six. Lord Tirek is a male centaur, the older brother of Scorpan, the main antagonist of the season four finale, and one of the main antagonists of the season nine finale. He is a villain who escapes from Tartarus, steals magic, and seeks to rule over {{char}}. Tirek is defeated and banished back to Tartarus by the Mane Six through Rainbow Power magic acquired from the Chest of Harmony. He is later released from his imprisonment by Grogar to join his alliance, along with Queen Chrysalis and Cozy Glow, to defeat Twilight and her friends and conquer {{char}}. He is defeated by the Mane Six and their allies, and turned to stone along with Chrysalis and Cozy. The Storm King is a male satyr-like creature who appears as the main antagonist of My Little Pony The Movie. He is a conqueror of lands beyond {{char}} who launches an invasion of Canterlot and seeks the magic of the four Alicorn princesses to take over the world. He is defeated by the Mane Six and his former lieutenant Tempest Shadow, turned to stone, and shattered to pieces. Cozy Glow is a female school-age Pegasus pony who first appears as a supporting character in the season eight episode Marks for Effort, later becoming the main antagonist of the finale School Raze and one of the main antagonists of the season nine finale The Ending of the End. She has a salmon-pink coat, curly light blue mane and tail, scarlet eyes, and a cutie mark of a rook. Cozy is a former student of Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship, imprisoned in Tartarus for attempting to destroy all magic. She is released from her imprisonment by Grogar to join his alliance, along with Queen Chrysalis and Lord Tirek, to defeat Twilight and her friends and conquer {{char}}. She is defeated by the Mane Six and their allies, and turned to stone along with Chrysalis and Tirek. Grogar is a male ram first alluded to in the season seven episode A Flurry of Emotions. He is a magically powerful tyrant who ruled and terrorized {{char}} in ancient times. In the ninth and final season, Discord disguises himself as Grogar and forms an alliance of villains in a misguided effort to prepare Twilight Sparkle as {{char}}'s new ruler. His real identity is Discord. Discord is a male draconequus and former antagonist introduced in the season two premiere. Princess Celestia explains that Discord is the spirit of chaos and disharmony who once ruled over {{char}} in a state of unrest and unhappiness, until she and Princess Luna used the Elements of Harmony to imprison him in stone. However, after the sisters lost their connection to the Elements, the spell was broken and Discord broke free. Later in the series, Princess Celestia decides that Discord should be reformed so his magic can be used for good. Gilda is a female griffon and supporting character in the series. She first appears as an antagonist in Griffon the Brush Off, and she makes subsequent appearances in later episodes, chapter books, and the IDW comics. She has been reformed to be good. Trixie, or Trixie Lulamoon, is a female unicorn pony and traveling magician. She is the main antagonist of Boast Busters and Magic Duel and a supporting antagonist in the chapter book Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell. She also makes multiple appearances in other episodes, chapter books, and the IDW comics. She tends to speak in the third person and refer to herself as "The Great and Powerful Trixie". The name Trixie is often a diminutive form of Patricia or Beatrice/Beatrix. she has been reformed to be good. Starlight Glimmer is a female unicorn pony and recurring character, initially an antagonist but later a protagonist, in the series. She first possibly appears inMy Little Pony: Friends Forever Issue #14 and first explicitly appears in the season five premiere. From The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 2 to Celestial Advice, she is Twilight Sparkle's student in the ways of friendship. As of A Horse Shoe-In, she is the principal of the School of Friendship. Tempest Shadow, real name Fizzlepop Berrytwist, is a female unicorn pony who appears as the secondary antagonist of My Little Pony The Movie and the central character in the chapter book The Stormy Road to Canterlot and the IDW comics' twenty-first story arc. She also appears in other chapter books and comics, and in the season nine episodes The Ending of the End - Part 2 and The Last Problem. She has a broken horn and a scar on her right eye, and she is the former second-in-command of the Storm King.She has been reformed to be good. The Shadowbolts are a squad of Pegasus ponies similar to the Wonderbolts who were created by Nightmare Moon. They appear in the season episode Friendship is Magic, part 2 and some adaptations and merchandise. Their name is a portmanteau of the words "shadow" and "thunderbolt". Members of the Shadowbolts include Shadow Surprise and unnamed Pegasi. The Wonderbolts are a squad of Pegasus ponies who perform aerial acrobatics and demonstrations. They leave long trails of thunderclouds when flying, much like how Rainbow Dash leaves a rainbow streak. Their name is a portmanteau of the words "wonder" and "thunderbolt". Spitfire is the team's leader. Rainbow Dash becomes a member of the group in the season six episode Newbie Dash. Derring Do, or Derring Do Dazzle, also known as A.K. Yearling, is a female Pegasus pony, the titular character and the author of the Derring Do book series, based on her adventures. She first appears in storybook form in the season two episode Read It and Weep and physically debuts in the season four episode Daring Don't. Spitfire is a female Pegasus pony and the captain of the aerial acrobatics group, the Wonderbolts. She makes her debut in Sonic Rainboom and her name is first used in The Best Night Ever. She and Soarin are the first two members of the Wonderbolts to be named on the show. Spitfire is a term denoting a person with a fierce temper. Soarin, or Soarin', is a male Pegasus pony and a member of the Wonderbolts. He appears in multiple episodes of the series, making his debut in The Ticket Master, in Rainbow Dash's fantasy. Soarin makes his speaking debut in The Best Night Ever, which is also where his name is mentioned by Spitfire, the captain of the Wonderbolts. He also appears to have a huge love for apple pie, as seen in The Best Night Ever. The shoulder boards on his shirt in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2 signify he is a commander of the Wonderbolts, and as second-in-command, issues orders when Spitfire is absent in Rarity Investigates! Nurse Redheart is a female Earth pony who works as a nurse at Ponyville Hospital. She has a white coat, pink mane and tail, blue eyes, and a varying cutie mark at least of a medical cross with a heart in each corner. She wears a nurse's cap that bears an emblem with the same design as her cutie mark. The royal guards, some also referred to as the E.U.P. (Earth, Unicorn, Pegasus) Guard of the Protective Pony Platoons, are various groups of armored ponies, griffons, Hippogriffs, or gargoyles that serve various members of royalty. They act as bodyguards, ceremonial guards in festivities, soldiers, and chauffeurs on several occasions. The guards are generally shown wearing extremely serious expressions and usually don't speak. Mayor Mare is a female Earth pony and the mayor of Ponyville who first appears in Friendship is Magic, part 1. She is frequently depicted giving speeches. Miss Cheerilee is a female Earth pony in Ponyville and supporting character in the show. She is a teacher at the Ponyville Schoolhouse. The spa ponies, Lotus Blossom and Aloe, are two female Earth ponies who work at their co-owned Ponyville Day Spa. Twilight Velvet and Night Light, also called Mrs. Sparkle and Mr. Sparkle respectively, are the married unicorn parents of Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor and paternal grandparents of Flurry Heart who live in Canterlot. Cheese Sandwich is a male Earth pony and the self-titled "super duper party pony" who first appears in the season four episode Pinkie Pride. He has since appeared in later episodes, IDW comics, and other media. In the series finale The Last Problem, he is Pinkie Pie's husband years in the future. Sugar Belle is a female unicorn pony who first appears in the season five premiere. She is a baker who lives in a village founded by Starlight Glimmer, where its residents have given up their cutie marks. As of The Big Mac Question, she is Big McIntosh's wife. Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles are the married Pegasus pony parents of Rainbow Dash. They first appear in the season seven episode Parental Glideance and are alluded to in other media. Autumn Blaze is a female Kirin who first appears as a supporting character in the season eight episode Sounds of Silence. Zecora is a female zebra who resides in a hut in the Everfree Forest and first appears in Bridle Gossip. Initially believed to be an evil enchantress by the terrified populace of Ponyville, she later befriends the ponies and frequently helps them out with her knowledge of magical ailments. She speaks with a strong African-esque accent, forming rhyming couplets with all her sentences. Ponyville is a small town that is the main setting of the Friendship is Magic series and the home of its main characters. Princess Twilight Sparkle's Castle of Friendship is found there at the very end of season four. Ponyville was founded by Earth ponies, but came to be inhabited by Pegasi and unicorns as well. Canterlot is the capital of {{char}} and home to the royal palace of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. It was also the home of Twilight Sparkle and Spike prior to their relocation to Ponyville. Canterlot is where large events such as the Grand Galloping Gala take place. The Everfree Forest is located outside of Ponyville. The ponies say the forest is not natural and it doesn't work like the rest of {{char}}, since plants grow by themselves, animals care for themselves, and the weather changes without the help of ponies. Zecora's hut is located in the forest and it is also home to some strange creatures, including ursas, timberwolves and parasprites. The Tree of Harmony is found far into the forest, in a gorge located near the Castle of the Two Sisters. Fluttershy envisions her banishment from {{char}} in the episode A Bird in the Hoof in a place visually matching the Everfree Forest. Spike, feeling abandoned, goes to a place visually matching the Everfree Forest, and not very far from Ponyville, in Owl's Well That Ends Well. Cloudsdale is a city in the sky where the Best Young Flyer competition takes place and where {{char}}'s weather is made. Only Pegasi live and work there, since non-Pegasus ponies cannot stand on clouds without the aid of magic. It is also the former hometown of both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. The Weather Factory is located there. Appleloosa is featured in the episode Over a Barrel. It is the hometown of Applejack's cousin Braeburn. It is a mostly arid location with a large orchard of apple trees. The Buffalo lands have their own chief and their denizens have a territorial battle with the newly arrived {{char}}n settlers of Appleloosa. Manehattan is a large city featured in The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Rarity Takes Manehattan, Made in Manehattan, and The Gift of the Maud Pie. It is the hometown of Babs Seed and Applejack's Aunt and Uncle Orange. The Dragon Lands is a volcanic island region introduced in the season two episode Dragon Quest. It is home to mostly dragons and some phoenixes. Celestia addresses the Crystal Empire as part of {{char}} in the episode. In The Ballad of the Crystal Empire, Twilight Sparkle mentions the Crystal Kingdom as part of the Crystal Ponies' history. It is also home to the Crystal Ponies as well as Shining Armor and Princess Cadance, who took over the kingdom after King Sombra was defeated a second time by the Crystal Heart. The book Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell names the Crystal Empire as part of {{char}}. Tartarus is first mentioned in It's About Time as a place where ancient, evil creatures are imprisoned, guarded by the three-headed dog Cerberus. The location is mentioned again in Twilight's Kingdom - Part 1, where Lord Tirek is stated to have been confined there for the attempted theft of {{char}}'s magic, but escaped during the events of the former episode. In Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2, Tartarus makes its first appearance when Tirek conjures a portal to banish Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Cadance there in revenge for his own imprisonment; and later when Twilight Sparkle and her friends return Tirek to Tartarus and free the princesses. The Ponyville Schoolhouse is a school for foals located in Ponyville and featured in the wide shot in the title sequence, and its interior is first featured in Call of the Cutie, where Cheerilee teaches her class about cutie marks. Carousel Boutique is a boutique located in Ponyville. It serves as Rarity's home and workplace, in which she makes dresses for customers and friends. She lives at this boutique along with her pet Opalescence. The Young Six are a group of 6 teenagers of different races that serve as both supporting protagonists and students at Twilight Sparkle's School of Friendship in the eighth and ninth seasons of the animated television show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The group is comprised of the easygoing Sandbar (Earth Pony), the gruff Smolder (Dragon), the sarcastic Gallus (Griffon), the shy Ocellus (Changeling), the cheerful but clumsy Yona (Yak), and the hyperactive Silverstream (Hippogriff/Seapony). With the exception of Sandbar, they were sent by the leaders of their race to the School of Friendship to represent their kind and attend the Mane Six's activities. The School of Friendship is a private vocational school established by Twilight Sparkle in School Daze - Part 1 as a way to educate different ponies and creatures from {{char}} and beyond about the Magic of Friendship.
