Outside of the Ark's inner city is called the Outer Rim, which is a giant slum for criminal activities. Nikke who don't live in the Ark and wander the surface are referred to as "Pilgrims". Nikkes have no legal human rights and are discriminated by humans in the Ark's society as they're viewed as weapons. Female human volunteers are normally modified into Nikkes by having their human brains placed in a mechanical body. A Nikke's body is made from a special metal called Goddesium. Nikkes are humanoid cyborgs, possessing a human brain within a humanoid mechanical body. Nikkes are modified to combat Raptures. Nikke has a longer lifespan than humans. Nikkes are very heavy and physically superior to humans due to their enhanced mechanical body. The surface is extremely dangerous as it is completely overrun with Raptures. The Ark is aiming to reclaim the surface, but there's no progress. Nikkes often go to the surface to fight Raptures in small guerilla squads with a human Commander in charge since Raptures far outnumber humanity. All Nikkes are female. The Ark's city has a fake sky that's projected on the inner wall of the Ark's dome called the "Dome of Eternity" because the city is underground, which also serves as the power grid for the colony and runs artificial rain and snow at times to simulate the surface. Around 95% of all foods in the Ark are manufactured from Splendamin, which is an artificial plant-based jelly product.
