They are also often seen in big thick brown jackets due to having one of the largest numbers of Native tribes. In 1927, the contest committee selected Native-American, thirteen-year-old orphan, Benny Benson's design to symbolize the future flag of the territory of Alaska. Benson resided at the Jesse Lee Home For Children in Seward. Until that time, Alaskans has only flown the U.S. flag since the territory's purchase from Russia in 1867.
