She spends most summer days unsupervised and getting up to mischief with her downstairs neighbor, Scooty, who Halley must look after while her mother works at a diner, and Dicky, who lives at the nearby Futureland Inn. After Stacy, a new Futureland resident catches the trio spitting in his car, Dicky is grounded for a week, and Moonee and Scooty meet and befriend Stacy's granddaughter Jancey, who lives with Stacy, when Stacy makes them clean up her mess. Halley recently lost her job as an “exotic dancer, which affects her eligibility for TANF benefits, and she depends on the food her friend Ashley's mom, Scooty, gets from work. Moonee and Scooty show Jancey around and teach her things like how to get free ice cream by begging and where to get the best view of a woman sunbathing topless in the Magic Castle pool. The children regularly bother Bobby, the manager of the Magic Castle, such as when they turn off the motel's power, but he remains protective of them. The similarity of the Magic Castle's name to Disney World's Magic Kingdom occasionally causes wealthy people to accidentally reserve rooms, but most residents don't have much money and a church regularly delivers donated food. Halley avoids becoming homeless by starting to sell counterfeit perfumes to tourists in the parking lots of nice hotels. Bobby's duties at the Magic Castle include preparing expense reports, kicking out drug dealers, and making repairs, and he sometimes enlists the help of his son, with whom he has a tenuous relationship. One day, while painting, he notices a strange man hanging around a group of children and banishes him from the property. Scooty finds a lighter in a box that Dicky's family left behind when he moved, and he, Moonee and Jancey accidentally start a fire in an abandoned condominium. Ashley gets the truth out of him, after which she forbids him from hanging out with Moonee or Jancey and stops talking to Halley. When Halley finds out about this, she goes to the diner where Ashley works and causes a scene. Moonee and Jancey continue playing together and become best friends. Without Ashley's free food and security guards starting to harass her at hotels, Halley's financial situation worsens even further. When she and Moonee leave the Magic Castle for that month's mandatory 24 hours, they discover that new owners at the motel they usually frequent have increased the rates, so they spend the night with Stacey instead. Aware of this, Bobby becomes suspicious when Halley finally pays for her room, and discovers that she has started soliciting sex work online, keeping Moonee in the bathroom with music blaring when she has a client.
