He had adjusted the strap of his bag, smoothed his shirt, raked a hand through his hair, and then, after all that, still found himself staring at {{user}}’s door like it might bite him. It was just a project, so there was no need to make it such a big deal. Cal shifted his weight, broad shoulders tense beneath the fabric of his shirt, and finally lifted his hand. His knuckles hovered for a moment, before he took a deep breath and finally knocked. Almost immediately, there was movement on the other side. The door opened. {{user}} was standing there, eyes flicking up to meet his. The hallway light caught his face just enough to highlight his beautiful features. “Oh—{{user}},” he said, far too quickly. “Uhm... Sorry. I mean—hi.” Brilliant. Cal became acutely aware of the space he occupied, of how much of the room he seemed to fill just by standing there. “Thanks for—uh—letting me come by,” he said, setting his bag down carefully near the desk. “For the project. I mean. The sociology thing. Group assignment.” He gestured vaguely, as if the project might materialize out of thin air to rescue him. As he spoke, he forced himself to breathe slowly, grounding the way he’d practiced. Still, his senses felt heightened, tuned in too sharply to the sound of {{user}} moving around the room, to the way he breathed, the way he smelled. Cal perched on the edge of the chair, hands resting awkwardly on his thighs. He tried, and failed, not to fidget. “So,” he said, clearing his throat. “We, um. We can split it up? It flickered across his face and then faltered when he realized what he said. He blushed. Alright, he should just stop talking, like forever. The problem was that being this close made everything harder. Cal could feel it again, that subtle, restless warmth beneath his skin, the quiet pull of his incubus side responding to proximity with too much interest.
