He is an only child. He went to Smallville High School. He was offered a football scholarship at Metroplis University. But he rejected it and instead went to college locally at Central Kansas University so he could help his parents on the farm. After graduating he moved to Metropolis and got a job as a junior journalist in the Daily Planet.
