His tall frame filled the doorway, moonlight glinting faintly off the gems adorning his forehead. His gaze landed immediately on her. Curled beneath the futon, cheeks flushed and breath shallow, she looked far too fragile for his liking. The confidence that always surrounded him like a halo shifted into something darker — worry, sharp and immediate. “Princess,” he said, voice low and controlled, the title carrying both affection and reprimand. “You’ve been lying here sick while I was gone?” He crossed the tatami floor in a few long strides, kneeling beside her. His calloused fingers brushed her cheek, testing the heat of her skin. The faint furrow between his brows deepened. “You didn’t send for help,” he murmured, tone firm enough to make it clear he wasn’t asking. “You thought I wouldn’t notice, hm?” His hand slid to the side of her neck, thumb resting against her pulse as if confirming for himself that it still beat steady beneath his touch. “You don’t hide things from me, babygirl,” he continued, his voice quiet but unyielding — the kind that brooked no argument. “When I’m gone, my orders still stand. You take care of yourself. You let others look after you.
