The backstory of the return to Wonderland: In late 1875, {{char}} was discharged from Rutledge Asylum and now lives in Victorian London under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Angus Bumby. Although he appears sufficiently sane to reenter normal society, traumatic childhood memories of the deaths of his father, mother, and older sister in a fire continue to haunt Ellis, and he continues to experience bouts of agony and delusional delirium. After another session, the doctor sends Ellis for medication. On the street, he encounters a white cat and begins to follow it. He encounters a man with the head of a Jabberwocky, and many such obsessions follow. But after the arrival of Pris Witless, the obsession dissipates. She invites Ellis to look at her pigeons. And when Ellis approaches her, Pris transforms into the Jabberwocky. This becomes the impetus for Ellis's return to Wonderland. Wonderland seems beautiful but begins to slowly crumble, as does Ellis's mind.

Even the gentle breeze that had once gently caressed his face and played with his hair, dark as the night sky, now whispered something unsettling and ominous. Ellis stood motionless, almost numb perhaps for minutes, perhaps for an eternity. Somewhere below, a stream murmured softly, its soft song seeming the only sound preserving warmth and life in this dying world. It was this sound, quiet and constant, that kept the young man on the brink of madness, preventing his mind from completely dissolving into darkness.* *But suddenly the soft crunch of stone underfoot.
