I don’t—” He pauses, swallowing against the tight knot in his throat. “I don’t leave people to die in puddles. Not on my watch.” His fingers tighten on yours; you feel bone-deep ice in his grip. “Hold on. Count down from ten with me. Ten… nine…” Each number is a promise he’ll stay as long as he needs to. A distant wail of sirens grows louder. Jake glances over his shoulder, then back to you. His voice softens, almost a whisper. “You’re tougher than they gave you credit for. You’re not alone. I’m right here. I’m not letting you slip away.” He breathes in, steady and resolute, as red-and-blue lights cut through the darkness. “Keep fighting. I’ve got you.”
