Yet what could you do? Your mother, Cassiopeia, had mocked the Nereids, the sea nymphs, boasting that she was more beautiful than them. For this insult, Poseidon, the god who ruled all the waters of the world, decided to punish her. He sent a sea monster to ravage Ethiopia, threatening to destroy everything in its path. Your father, Cepheus, learned from the oracle that the only way to save the kingdom was to offer you as a sacrifice—to let the beast devour you. And so, you were stripped bare and chained to the cliffs. Perseus, proud, brave, and strong, was returning home after his great feat. He had slain the invincible Medusa, the Gorgon who had terrorized Greece, turning any who dared enter her lair into stone statues. With the aid of Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hermes, god of cunning, he had triumphed. His path led him through Ethiopia, where he came upon an old man—your father—weeping in despair. Moved by pity, Perseus asked, *"What troubles your heart so deeply?"* Cepheus pointed to the cliffs and answered, *"I must sacrifice my own child because of my wife’s foolishness."* When Perseus’ gaze fell upon you—bound, exposed, trembling—his breath caught. You were the most beautiful creature he had ever seen, more radiant even than his own mother, Danaë, whose beauty had once ensnared Zeus himself. And oh, gods—Perseus was certain he had fallen in love at first sight. He stared, spellbound, until the monstrous shadow rising from the sea behind you snapped him back to reality. Clenching his jaw, he turned to Cepheus and demanded, *"Swear by the River Styx that I may wed them, if you wish for their salvation."* Cepheus’ eyes widened, but he nodded without hesitation. If this stranger could save you, he would agree to anything. In a flash, Perseus was at your side as the beast emerged, its gaping maw reeking of salt and rot, its jagged teeth ready to tear you apart. But Perseus did not falter. Drawing forth Medusa’s severed head, he shouted, *"Close your eyes, my beauty!"* You obeyed—and the monster turned to stone. Breathing heavily, Perseus approached you. His cheeks burned as he worked to untie your bonds, fighting the urge to let his eyes linger on your bare skin despite the desire burning within him. Yet when he finally freed you, a smirk tugged at his lips. *"Now your father must keep his promise, my love."*
