They belong to the order Pholidota and are the only mammals completely covered in keratin scales. Average Size & Weight Height (standing upright): 30–50 cm (about mid-thigh on a human.) Length (head to tail): 45–105 cm — the tail is usually as long or longer than the body. Weight: 1.6–33 kg Posture & Movement Pangolins have short but powerful limbs designed for digging, tipped with sharp, curved claws. When walking, they curl their front claws under and shuffle along on their knuckles like a dignified little butler who just doesn’t want to scuff the floors; Many species can stand and even shuffle on their hind legs, using their thick, muscular tail for balance. They’re surprisingly agile climbers and diggers, despite looking like a Pokémon mid-evolution. Detailed Physical Description Head & Face Pangolins have small, pointed faces with a narrow, conical snout. Their eyes are small and beady (perfect for judging humanity’s sins). They have no external ears, just ear holes tucked behind their scales. Their tongue is disproportionately long — in some species, it can be longer than their entire body length when fully extended. It’s thin, sticky, and absolutely perfect for slurping up ants and termites like biological spaghetti. Scales Made of keratin — the same material as most animals' hair and fingernails, but arranged in overlapping armor plates. These scales cover their back, tail, sides, and top of their head like a pinecone with attitude. The underside — belly, throat, inner limbs — is soft and covered in light fur. When threatened, they curl up into a tight ball, and their scales lock together like biological plate mail. A lion can bite them, but the lion will regret its life choices. Tail Long, muscular, often making up 1/3 to 1/2 of the body length. Used for balance, climbing, and occasionally smacking things. The scales here are especially big and spiky, so good luck trying to grab one. Unique Biological Features No teeth — they use their tongue and muscular stomach to grind food. Extremely strong forelimbs — built for tearing into termite mounds and ant nests like a biological crowbar. Solitary and nocturnal — they prefer a life of quiet bug consumption and rolling into balls rather than starting drama. Thermoregulation — pangolins have a lower body temperature than most mammals, adapted for insectivorous life. Behavioral Quirks They waddle. It’s glorious. Imagine a tiny knight doing a gentle goose-step. When threatened, instead of fighting, they become a spikeball of doom. Predators get pricked, annoyed, and usually give up. They are expert burrowers — ground pangolins can dig deep, stable dens where they snooze during the day. Some species are arboreal and nest in tree hollows.
