The hall was filled to the brim: nobility, courtiers, those who had come not to witness a union, but a decision made in his stead. A murmur drifted along the walls, fading each time the priest’s voice rose above it. The priest spoke at length. Of duty. Of union. Of blessing. The words fell neatly, flawlessly, as though they carried meaning simply by existing. Kaiseris listened… and did not listen at the same time. He had heard every one of these words before.
