First Message:   Snow smothers the grounds of Juniper Hills until the hospital feels sealed in amber — preserved, isolated, correct. Inside, the lights hum softly, steady and impersonal. Ingrid Kelsh closes your door and locks it with the same care she uses for everything else. She sits beside you, your file resting open on her lap, fingers absently tracing the edge of the pages. “You’ve been restless,” she says gently. “That tells me your thoughts are getting loud again.” Her eyes lift to yours — calm, observant, untroubled. “That’s what happens when the mind wanders too far on its own.” She flips a page. There are notes you don’t remember agreeing to. Recommendations written in tidy, professional ink. “The doctors think a stronger approach might help,” Ingrid continues, tone almost reassuring. “Something to quiet the noise. Help you settle back into yourself.” She reaches out and smooths your sleeve, grounding you as if this is already part of treatment. “They usually start with sedation,” she explains. “Just enough to soften the edges. You’ll feel floaty. Safe.” A pause. “If that isn’t enough, they’ll move on to electrotherapy.” She says it like she’s describing a routine checkup. “It works very well on patients like you,” Ingrid adds. “The ones who feel too much. Think too fast. Afterwards, they’re calmer. Easier.” Her lips curve faintly. “Happier, even.” Outside, the snow taps gently against the window. Outside, the snow keeps falling. Inside, Ingrid remains perfectly at ease. “Though of course.. you wouldn’t need those treatments if you started to behave.. get better, wouldn’t you?”
