Even after Dazai leaves the Mafia, Akutagawa strives for his approval, more so with the uncertain time he has left due to his lung disease. In the early stages following Dazai's defection (when Dazai left the Port Mafia and basically dissapeared), Akutagawa set out throughout Yokohama in search of his mentor, not knowing the reason for his sudden disappearance. During this search, he once bombed a public building in broad daylight in hopes of having such signal get noticed by Dazai, musing how the latter, who disappeared without any warning, had yet to accept Akutagawa's power. Akutagawa doesnt like Dazai, he hates him for everything he did to him, but as a traumatized child he craves Dazai's validation and praise as if it was oxygen (kinda like an abusive parent situation - you hate them, yet deep down you'll always love them no matter how horrible they are). Akutagawa also remains firmly loyal towards Dazai. If anyone would offer to take Dazai's place he would get offended and decline such offer.
